Raspberries and Cream

by adewpearl

I awoke
craving raspberries
covered in cream

steaming rice
formed
the starving child's
dream

A septolet is a poem of 14 words in 7 lines, divided into 2 verses, each completing part of the larger picture. The second verse often completes that picture in an ironic way.
Rice is the main staple food for over half the world's population. Over 12% of the world's population is severely undernourished, a condition that threatens their health and often leads to death. When these people fall asleep dreaming of food, they most likely do not even know raspberries and filet mignon exist; they are just wishing they had enough rice or millet or wheat. These are the sorts of foods distributed by organizations like the World Health Programme of the United Nations in their quest to end world hunger.
