The Hummingbird

by adewpearl

Purple
rose of sharon --
nectar sweet
as wine.

A hummingbird
approaches --
God's divine design.

The septolet is a poem of 14 words in 7 lines. There are two verses that when considered together, form a complete picture.
The rose of sharon is a flowering bush often planted to attract hummingbirds, who like its nectar. The rose of sharon is a flower mentioned in Solomon in the Bible and is also mentioned in quite a few novels, poems and songs. My favorite is John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, where the pregnant daughter of the Joad family is named Rose of Sharon.
