A Poet's Plea

by adewpearl

Delphinus, in the northern sky,
please shine on me tonight.
Upon my quest to craft this verse,
I beg your guiding light.

Long years ago a poet's pleas
were cast upon the sea.
You rescued fair Arion then --
so now, please pity me.

I've never plucked a classic lyre,
nor won the gods' acclaim,
yet still I ask you shape the words
upon this poem's frame.

It's far beyond my meager gifts
to bring the world to peace.
I plead, Delphinus, just one time,
my talents you increase.

For if you don't infuse my words
with magic you've bestowed,
I fear that soon we'll seal our fate --
and watch the world explode.

Delphinus is a constellation in the shape of the dolphin that rescued the poet Arion from the sea after pirates cast him there to die. Arion was a famous Greek poet credited
with inventing the poetic form that gave rise to the
ancient Greek theater. Legend has it that he traveled to a musical competition in Sicily, which he won, and upon his journey home, his ship was attacked by pirates, who robbed him of his prize and threw him into the sea to die. He sang a song of praise to Apollo, the god of poetry,
which attracted a dolphin that carried him to safety. The
dolphin was then rewarded with eternal life by being turned into the constellation Delphinus.
The recent missile testing by North Korea has reminded me once more that for millennia humankind has wished for peace, and for just as long we have slaughtered each other.
No poet nor philosopher nor spiritual leader has yet to persuade the leaders of the world to end this insanity. If I could use up my one favor from the gods of poetry for one perfect poem, I would ask they grant me the power to write that poem that brings the world to its senses.
