May 28, 2009 will be the 50th anniversary of my mother's death. It has always been one of the most significant dates of each year for me. I've often thought that some day there will be a date like that in my children's lives - the anniversary of my death, and yet there is no way for me to know what that most important date in my life and their lives will be. It's just one of those things I ponder from time to time.
I expect the last two lines of this poem, especially the word "gratefully" will have some ambiguity for readers - and will be read one way or the other depending on any particular reader's frame of mind and outlook on life.
