Quatrain poem about a Mother's Sorrows

Too Great a Grief

by adewpearl

She bore ten sons and daughters five,
so many chances for new life,
but only two were still alive,
the day death snatched her from all strife.

Before they placed her in the ground,
before her blood turned icy cold,
full thirteen babes were heaven bound,
none having lived past eight days old.

She lay too ill to see the last,
her twins, be buried side by side,
then when a few more days had passed,
Rebecca Park gave up and died.

The Park family stone in Grafton, Vermont, records the death of this mother at age 40 in September of 1803. The Grafton Historical Society has provided the history of her sorrows. I plan to revisit her gravestone in a future poem, so for now I will just record what I learned of her family's sad story. Nobody knows what killed thirteen of her babies within days of birth, but modern medical scientists speculate it might have been an Rh factor problem. Less than a year after Rebecca died, the youngest of her two surviving sons, a seven year old, died in an epidemic.
