Some words have been used enough times to retire them, bury them, ground them into dust!! "Very" is one of them - truly, is there ever a time we can't find a better
alternative? I once started to compile a list for my students, and I considered writing one of those "how-to" essays with a lengthy list, but I decided to select a few examples to post in poetic form. Everyone here is a writer who can come up with hundreds of additional alternatives while composing and editing.
