Gloating

by adewpearl

for the World Champion Phillies!!!

We ambushed them, they bit the dust -
what an assassination.
They never stood the slightest chance
in the face of annihilation.

We butchered them, we brought them down,
we buried and we beat them.
We bettered and we battered them -
outclassed them first, then creamed them.

We chastised them until they choked -
conquered them with clout.
Clobbered, crushed and crucified,
they begged for that last out.

We dropped, destroyed and dumped them,
dispatched them with a drubbing.
While they were decimated,
the bets on us kept doubling.

We emerged victorious,
extinguishing their flames.
Embarrassed and eclipsed by us,
they dreaded future games.

We foiled, flailed and flattened them,
flustered and finished them off.
Gave them a whopping that was so bad
their own fans started to scoff.

Handed their heads on a platter,
they were humiliated.
We iced the game with two grand slams -
til' they were invalidated.

They jinxed themselves with their jive talk,
that they would score a K.O.
We were the ones to knock them out,
and that's all you need to know.

We liquidated them today -
fans cheered as we mowed them down.
After we nailed the coffin shut,
they gave us keys to the town.

Outstripped and overshadowed,
their team was overcome.
We overwhelmed and pounded them
until they all went numb.

We pummeled them and quashed them -
we really ripped them apart.
We skunked, shellacked and shot them down,
subdued them from the start.

We trampled, trounced and thrashed them -
we threw them for a loop.
We took them down a peg or two,
no chance they might regroup.

We upset and upturned them
as we made history.
They were now the vanquished
as we claimed victory.

We wiped the floor with their smug smiles -
we walked all over their pride.
We whipped them and we whopped them
til' they turned to jelly inside.

We marked their doom with a big fat X,
yanked them around til' they yowled.
We zonked them with our great prowess -
with zeal we whooped and howled.

We won in ways so plentiful
they span the alphabet,
but no poem captures all the ways,
at least one hasn't yet.

This is not only a tribute to my beloved Phillies, who captured the World Series title for the first time in 28 years, but to sports writers, who are the most colorful of all writers. I'm always astounded at the new ways they come up with to say "win" or "beat."
