free verse musings about the vagaries of life
The Kaleidoscope
by adewpearl
it's all a matter of perspective
Sometimes life shatters - splintering sleep, dashing dreams, strewing once grand designs in sharpened shards upon the ground, fragile fragments of crystalline beliefs. Sometimes hope scatters - swirling in a vortex of lies, wandering in a labyrinth of false starts, despairing of eternal loss in misdirection's maze, entrapped by fate's cruel grasp. But consider the kaleidoscope - where perfect moments glow in transitory splendor, where fragments fall and splinters merge to quick give way to new design whose glory often does outshine what it replaces. What whimsical delights swirl by in technicolor recreation, a feast of shifting colors whose fanciful flights of expectation pose potent possibilities with each new scene. Consider this when life has shattered and fragments only remain of dreams - A life kaleidoscopically viewed is life where hope each day's renewed. |

I have loved kaleidoscopes since as a child I owned the cardboard tube my parents purchased for me at the five and dime. Their major attraction is not the stunning beauty of one image the glass pieces form, but the fact that only seconds later, that image will be replaced by another and yet another. Any movement of the tube causes the whole thing to change. There is no despair in the loss of one beautiful picture because another is sure to follow.
Such is life. Everything can change in a moment, and yet, if we allow for the transition, something new is bound to follow, often better than what it has replaced. Life is not as simple as the kaleidoscope - a new and better picture is not guaranteed within seconds, but the possibility is there if we keep our eyes and hearts open.
