A Cautionary Tale

by adewpearl

To the adventurous of spirit

Too much of life I've lived by degrees,
till life's sabotaged by uncertainties.
By guarding my speech and with measured step,
at vigilance I've become adept.

Opportunities lost while I delayed -
mediocrity is the price I've paid.
Adventure belongs to those who don't wait -
prosaic their lot who hesitate.

Faint hearts can't live out but lackluster days -
no seas do they sail, no trails do they blaze,
no glories to win, no chances to seize
for those who don't act without guarantees.

Though the circumspect be the most secure,
prudence will prove to be life's saboteur.

The question posed in this contest intrigues me - HOW should we exist. This poem is about both how we should and how many of us do instead. I wish I could claim to be one of life's adventurers as it is definitely how I believe life should be lived.
