Longings

by adewpearl

For everyone who has ever reached out to someone who made that difficult.
In the coldest heart lives a yearning place,
one that's never completely withdrawn.
Sorrows can mount till our hope can't keep pace,
but our deepest longings live on.
We long to be loved; we need to belong,
to be caught if we fall from grace.
We all cry for justice when we've been wronged,
pray for lives that don't go to waste.
The coldest of hearts once beat in a child -
before childhood's dreams were dashed.
How can anyone watch his dreams exiled
and have his innocence last?
So when I encounter a heart grown cold,
may I with my heart that heart enfold.

Recognized

It is so easy to love an innocent child, an outgoing neighbor, a friendly classmate, anyone with a smile on his or her face. How much harder it is to accept those with a perpetual frown, a gloomy outlook, a hard edge, a grouchy disposition. They were all once innocent children too - what has happened to them to make them hard to love? This is my small plea to consider that before we leave them standing off to the side.
