Earthen Shades

by Mike K2

How to describe the color brown?

Being knee jerk and
smart-ass, the color
brown is something you
do everyday that
really stinks.
To dwell and faithfully
answer this question
shows that I am less
sighted then I think.

Best to hand you a bunch
of dried leaves, feel the
edge; running smooth, lobbed or
that sawtooth that can cut and vex.
Feel one surface and it is as
smooth as glass, the other side
is vein-filled and as if in braille
its character is complex.

Think of smells, like freshly
brewed coffee with that aroma
of burnt caramel.
Or of tea, with hintingly fruity
and tannic steam; both warms the
body and enchants the soul well.

For its' sound, we head out into
the woods and listen to the rustling
leaves as they dance about.
One leaf, scrapes along in its own
song. Others combine into a symphony
or in syncopation, like a Cajun rout.

Poets and writers like to use this
time between Autumn and Winter,
to express death and feelings that are sad.
But jump up and down, the ground is
also brown and your support, those
same smells from beverages can be had.

Brown is amazingly simple as it
dissolves and breaks down.
Yet surprisingly complicated as
it is the substrate where life
will once again abound.

A lot of inspiration went into this. The Maryland School for the Blind is just a short distance away and really, for the most part they do fine and I wanted to describe brown as they know it, through all of the other senses. To me, brown is a simple color, but I mix printing ink as one of my jobs and it is the most complex out of the spectrum to get right. Usually the largest ingredient is transparent white followed by three or four other colors at minute amounts. That turns getting a brown right into about the biggest pain in the ass I am subjected to. Also, I take nature as it comes, all seasons. The end of Autumn keeps me out the longest, it is the most comfortable, with the most going on. I wanted to get back at the recondite writers and poets that have to use it to signify death and sadness. To me, it is the gestation that leads to winter, in my opinion the birth of purity and time to rest a bit more.

Last, I have to share this experience that happened when I attended a housewarming barbecue a couple of doors down. I sat at a table with a very nice couple and had great conversations. They both worked and told me of the sights of their travels. They had a daughter that was fairly young and I thought she was very nice as she got them food. I didn't realize until she put the both of them in a line and led them to the car that that couple was completely blind. I felt snookered!
