1,000-Word Story

Just for your writing enjoyment, we've expanded the initial "Spider or Friend" writing prompt to include 9 more story starters.

Your task, should you choose to accept it: Finish one of the following ten writing prompts. Choose any one of the ten prompts below and finish the story in 1,000 words or less.

1) A friend is giving an important speech before an enraptured, silent audience. A large and nasty-looking spider is crawling up your friend's suit (or dress) toward the bare neck. No one can see it but you. You can interrupt the speech or just let it go and not cause a scene. What do you do?" One more thing -- the friend giving the speech has arachnophobia.

2) The first time I met Micah she was probably 70 years old, a quirky squirrel of a lady with over sized glasses and a tie-dye sun dress she never washed.

3) I covered my wife with the silk-stemmed flowers, the night river stars shining down on her lifeless body.

4) Otis spit sideways, wiped his mouth, and chased after me with an empty can of Falstaff beer in his hands.

5) The law of attraction is an ancient law, used by many great men to gain power, wealth, and love.

6) All we had left to eat was a can of mustard sardines and a couple of Mentos, and we didn't even have a can opener for the sardines.

7) When Charlie lost his hearing completely, Darby signed them both up for sign language classes.

8) Crazy? Hell yeah, she was as crazy as a Hoot Owl on acid!

9) Hand in hand we stepped into the pool with bare feet, the sparkling sea water surprisingly warm and comforting.

10) I walked inside Big Jim's Hunting Shop and rang a silver bell that sat atop a paper-covered cherry desk. A sign hung above the entrance read: "Mammoth Hunting Trips: $999."
