Must Read Story Beginnings-RELOADED

I've received several requests to repeat this contest.
I'll see if I can avoid some mistakes from the first run.

This is a prose only contest, fiction or non-fiction.
You are to write a minimum of three to a maximum of six book or story
beginnings. These are to be actual beginnings, as they would appear
in your story or book. I don't want advertisements trying to capture
your audience with an outrageous idea like "What if Superman joined the Nazis?".
That's a fun idea, but you wouldn't start your book with that line.

The word limit is forty (40) words. There is no limit on sentences, only words. Be careful, the word count will be strictly enforced.
Using titles is optional. Titles do NOT count against the word limit.
You may select one piece of artwork for your entry. No artwork in the body of your piece.

Don't try to write a forty-word story. Just write the BEGGINING of a story or book. Grab the reader and make them want to keep reading, that's all.

Read the entries in the first version of this contest. You'll see what to do and what not to do. The mistake I made was to write IDEAS instead of beginnings. I also tended towards climactic moments. If you start at the climax, what are you going to build to? Just some tips. :)

The contest winner will win half of the prize pool of 90.00 member dollars. In this contest at least 2 submissions must be made for the vote to begin.

Deadline: Contest is closed. Deadline was Monday, October 5, 2015.
