Leann DS: There is a 100 word/fiction contest approaching. Could someone please tell me if the 100 words includes the title or not? Thank you.
Jannypan (Jan) : Read carefully at the rules. Sometimes it states 'not including title' and sometimes it say 'including title. If neither is stated, then ??? -
nor84: I would say 99% title does not count toward word count, so unless rules state that title does count, I wouldn't worry about it. -

Leann DS: Fan art tips needed, please!
When searching for images using fan art review, I cannot seem to find anything even close to my search terms. Does anybody have any tips for using the search on that site? Help! And thank you.
nor84: try again. if you're being too specific, try a simpler search. For example, if you want a picture of a locomotive, try searching for 'trains' and a locomotive may pop up. -

FanStory wrote to Leann DS: One More Broken Promise finished third in the contest "Short story"

Leann DS: Happy 2021, everyone. I have a few thoughts about this website. I joined because I thought I would get some helpful feedback about my writing; and I thought I may be able to help some others by providing them with the same. what I have discovered is that almost everybody gets a five star rating and nobody says anything very helpful to encourage stronger writing. I was told by a fellow member that a four star rating is considered an insult. What the heck?

It reminds me of some of those contestants on American idol who can't sing their way out of a bucket, but along the way, someone has told them they are talented. They suck. Now they're embarrassing themselves and do not have any idea that they are. I always think? "Don't they have anybody who loves them enough to be honest with them?"

When I first started doing reviews, I was basically basing my reviews on a grading scale like a teacher, as I am a former teacher. Five stars would be an A, four stars would be a B, etc. apparently, people are offended by this honesty.

Then, I have entered several contests. Some of the entries are just outstanding! And they don't win. They're not even in the top three. This tells me the people voting don't know what they're doing. It's pretty discouraging. and I am not talking about myself not winning. Some of my contest entries just weren't very good, but there were others that were and they still did not win. I really wish that there were competent judges and reviewers who could give constructive criticism without fear of being outcast and ridiculed by the other members for being honest.

I am definitely not talking about all the members here. There are many very talented and creative writers in this forum. But some of you? Yeah? You're not good. I wish someone would tell you what to do differently so you could improve your writing, because it's clear that you enjoy it.
mrsmajor: A very interesting essay, one that I often read from subscribers that haven't been here very long. I've been on this site for more than 15 years, and because of those years, the reviews, corrections and yes many of those 5 star rating, I think I can finally call myself a poet. However, if you find those you choose to mention, in need of your expertise, why not send them a PM and express your displeasure. It might be helpful, to add your helpful comments to those that obviously need to hear from you, especially since you find them "Not Good"... -
Erika Seshadri: Hi, I?m somewhat new to this site, but I feel your comments so much. Five star reviews are so common, I feel like a jerk giving someone four stars. It?s gotten to the point where I simply skip over work that I find less than average. I?d rather my lack of review speak louder than my words. I do hand out 4 stars from time to time if the writer is on a decent path forward and just needs some input. Yet I?ve seen pieces written incoherently that somehow receive six stars... I?ve come to realize that the emotional content of a piece sometimes counts more with fanstory voters than the quality of writing. And that?s fine. It creates a new challenge for me to not only deliver something that is well-written, but also choose a topic that speaks volumes to people. -

FanStory wrote to Leann DS: Temporary Love finished third in the contest "Nonet Poem Contest"

Leann DS: Is there a place on here for sharing song lyrics?
nor84: No, not specifically for that. Many could be entered in poetry contests, I suppose. -
damommy: There used to be a place for music in the forum, but I see it's gone. Perhaps you should contact Tom about that. -
FanStory: Yes, when posting choose "Poem". On the posting screen change the category to song lyrics. If you wish under advanced options you can upload an mp3 version of the song. -

Leann DS: I am a 52 year old mother of three, stepmother of two, and grandmother of 10. I have always enjoyed writing, but by no means, am I a professional. All constructive criticism is welcome, as I joined this community so I could improve my writing. I am totally blind and have been for the last seven years, and therefore, I may occasionally have some typos or formatting errors, but please bear with me. I am more interested in my content, style, form, and ability to evoke an emotional response of some sort. If someone is here to assist me, I can add images to my work, but otherwise, I have not figured out how to do that yet.
Jannypan (Jan) : You may use Fanart on FS site or something like google advanced image search.com

There are many image sites to find pictures. -
Leann DS: the problem is not that I cannot find images, but that I cannot see them to know if they are appropriate for adding to my work. When I say "blind," I mean totally, can't see a damn thing, all blackness blind. -
    Lobber: Hello,
I?d be willing to help you with selecting and posting an image. I also know how to ad inages within your entry -

I?d be willing to help you with selecting and posting an image. I also know how to add images within your entry. Doable but much more time consuming.
I read you piece about 5-star ratings. You are correct - they appear to be meanungless. -
Mastery: Go to FanArt, Leann. :) Bob -
