Mjsdesire: I've been working on my romance novel, I Found My Heart In San Francisco since 2008. The story started out as just an idea my best friend Chenelle and I talked about. That's the way most of the stories that we write start out. We're both huge fans of Michael Jackson and his family. We were always making up stuff around him and his family. We always injected ourselves into our stories too as a love interest mostly, but also as a friend or family member. So I had this idea for a romance story with Michael as the leading man and I gave him a leading lady. The family was always called Jackson, but their first names were different. Michael's character was called Cody at first. His love interest's name was Lisa. I was okay with that for a little while, but I didn't really like Lisa Marie Presley the woman that the real life MJ was married to. The story didn't gel for me. I didn't have much of it written. A year and a half later, Michael remarried Debbie Rowe. Then in June 2009, tragedy struck and Michael Jackson died. It was a time of sorrow and pain. Many of his fans turned to each other to deal with the loss and for comfort. I was no exception. I was going through my own period of mourning, but I still had this story in my head that I wanted to write so to keep his memory alive I got busy. I had my characters and an idea, but I wasn't satisfied with what I had written so far, and most of it focused on the leading lady's best friend Chey Kirkland. I decided to change things. I was determined to write this story especially since MJ was gone. The first thing I did was change the characters names. I thought that since my story was about a girl who meets and falls in love with her favorite celebrity of all time, and I was talking about Michael Jackson, why not go on and use his real name? So I changed his name from Cody Jackson to Michael, and changed his brothers and sisters names back to their real names also. Lisa wasn't working for me as the leading lady either so I changed her character to Lakara Rhodes, and I made up a family around her. Now I was happy. I changed the focus of the story from Chey Kirkland to Lakara. As soon as I did that, the story came together. It flowed and took off with a life of its own. My thoughts flowed freely about different parts. I have to finish some chapters and fill in parts so it's still a work in progress. I just want to finish it hopefully by the time Valentine's Day comes around, then I just want to sit back and read it from beginning to end. I wrote it especially for the fans and it's completely fictional. I might mention other celebrities that the real MJ actually knew, but it's strictly a fantasy story. The story contains love scenes, but I in no way mean to defame or sully the name or reputation of the real Michael Jackson. Those particular scenes were actually the hardest thing for me to write. I blushed the whole time I wrote them, and I still do when I re-read over it. It's a love story and all it's meant to convey is the love and passion between two special people. I want feedback as to how I'm doing as a writer and I welcome the advice to make it better. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it. I already have ideas in my head for a follow-up book about Michael and Kara's life after they get married and have children. It's going to be called "My Husband the King of Pop". |
