S A Bullen: My grandfather left school when he was thirteen which was not unusual in Australia in those days and he didn't even own a pair of shoes when he was young - I'm told this also was not unusual. He had little education, but he wrote poetry; sweet, simple and soulful. He died when I was twelve and my memories were of him reciting poetry and singing - he had a great voice. I often wonder what course his life would have taken had he had the opportunities there are today. |
