umbrellalemming: I'd really like to try my hand at writing a novel, but I'm having trouble doing an outline. Any suggestions?
    redrider6612: Remember, an outline doesn't need to be rigid or detailed. If you get stuck, work on character bios. Or write scenes. -
    nor84: As Red says, an outline can be simple. Make a list of what you want to have happen in the beginning and in the end. Then figure out how to get from point A to the end. What important things have to happen?

    Some writers don't outline at all. They just put the characters in a situation and let them fight their way out. It's better if you do learn to outline. The writing will go smoother and you won't leave out a main point, but if you can't, try being a pantser (writing by the seat of one's pants -- no outline.) -
    umbrellalemming: I've always been a "pantser," but it only works for poetry or short stories. I've never been able to stick to anything else long enough b/c I lose my train of thought. That's why I decided to try outlining. These are good suggestions. Thanks so much!! -


umbrellalemming: Is clip art necessary? Does this increase the value of the writing, or should we be basing opinion on the poetry alone? Thoughts?
    purrfect tale: You will find opinions very greatly on this subject. Personally, I don't like the art work. I think poetry and prose should stand on its own. Too often the writer depends on the picture to get the meaning across, not the words. That would be okay if the writer created the art-work, but it is a rare occurrence. -
    Lady & Louis: There was a thread on this in one of the other forums recently. Like Purrfect said, opinions will vary. Some reviewers will complain if someone doesn't use art, which is just wrong. We're not critiquing the art. That said, I am perfectly happy to see well-chosen pictures to accompany something, or the writer's own art (I illustrate all my posts) and there are, or used to be, contests with 'write about this' themes where it's necessary. But outside those, it's entirely the writer's choice. (When it comes to actual clip-art cartoons, I don't care for them - I think they're pretty feeble for the most part and tend to let a humourous piece down.) -

    i believe the words themselves must paint the picture. but i'm also not immune to posting a pic either (but i search hard to find the "perfect" one too)

This is my first day to fanstory.com, and already, I am pleased. I love the candidness of the reviewers. They don't mince criticism (good OR bad), and this is especially refreshing after forcing my poetry on friends and family. No one wants to be the one with the negative review. Maybe they think I'll retaliate with a fruitcake at Christmas. Maybe they're right...Thank you everyone for not holding back.
