for folks like me, as well, as those not like me. - Amen! I understand the enormity of casting a vote. Especially when there are so many laws and practices to impede the right for so many. This is an important and impactful work. Thanks for writing it. Well Written, Well Done.

What I liked about this was that you brought all that sense of responsibility down on our shoulders here. The decision is always a big one, one that not enough people take seriously, especially in these non congressional and presidential years. Not many people realize that most of these votes today are decided by less than 30% of the electorate. And that's a shame. estory

Thank you for this fine poem! If I don't vote and all the people who say they won't vote, don't - who the heck is left? To me the vote is sacred...my little way to have a voice and hope it influences in some way. We Americans have let things slide until there is no pride in anything. We are the people and let the people speak!!

Good on you Jessie, yet, the right answer for one is always going to be the wrong answer for another, depending on the line that is stood on. Not many can stand for what is truly best for all, with thought, than what is truly best for oneself, because it is all one knows...and believes.
Lets us hope my friend, let us hope.
Best wishes.
Have good day.

Voting is incredibly important, especially with today's government. We need to make sure that everybody's votes count. Thank you for sharing this poem with us. I enjoyed reading.

A fine poem, free verse to suit the theme .You have structured it well to stress the importance of choice.Freedom comes with responsibility .The responsibility of every citizen to put the country before himself....

Wish I had a six for this very important posting. Voting is a remarkable right and a crucial one for people living free under a government originally created to work toward protecting its citizens from alarming threats. Somehow, it seems to have fallen off the track in many areas. It is the people who are responsible for making sure those in charge are the ones who love the USA and not hate it. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Wow, you have said a mouthful! I agree that it's the people of this country who need to believe in it and protect its sovereignty!
Make sure the ones in charge love it instead of hating it.
Have a wonderful holiday season!

This free verse use line breaks well to describe the act and the emotion of voting. It is hard sometimes to make decisions because you can't look up everyone running. Sometimes the choice is not there. This is when candidates run unopposed.
Keep writing and stay healthy

You are so right, Joan, sometimes we don't know much about the candidates who run.
At times the choice is not there though I believe in my poem just the same!
I promise to stay healthy and will keep writing to my own capability.
Take good care of yourself,
Jesse

You?re welcome. No reason not to believe in it.

Hello Jesse James Doty,
You have very beautifully depicted the condition of a voter before casting his/her vote. This sometimes happens with those who are not affiliated with any political party.
Nice presentation!

To peruse a ballot is good. To understand the initiatives, to know the candidates' reputations and stances is the bound duty of an elector. I'll never forget an elderly woman already in the voting booth, coming out and asking the poll workers which of the candidates for judgeships she should vote for. Ah well, at least in this country, there are so few restrictions on voter eligibility that nearly everyone has the franchise. Remember the fuss about permitting citizens eighteen years of age to vote? If they can be drafted, why shouldn't they have the vote?
Nicely done, Fantasist
