This is very good writing. I'm afraid I am one of those folks who have given up on politics and voting. However, you are right, it is a privilege that a lot of countries do not offer their citizens. My husband and I always voted in the years-long gone. Now I'm alone and appalled at the state of our government. The whole system needs a complete makeover.

An interesting piece Jesse. Yes, we all have a responsibility. That one vote can make such a big difference. In Oz we have a federal election next year and Labour will probably get in. We have too many people on Welfare. The system really needs to be reviewed. Many Australians are lazy and prefer to pick up the dole than work. The Government are offering incentives to overseas people to work here because even though there are many jobs available they can't get the Aussies to work. It makes me so angry. All the best Franky

Kool, Franky, I love the name you have chosen! It is too bad that in Australia so many people do not care to work. I know of several on FS and they are either retired or working independently. Here in the USA we also have some who do not care to work, but they still have a chance to vote. I wrote this for the people of FS to understand the importance of the privilege to vote! Here we learn that one vote can make all the difference!
Thank you for selecting my poem to review, I hope we have a chance to get to know each other better!
Take good care of yourself!
Jesse

In Oz it's compulsory for adults to vote. Thanks for the chat. I'm sure we'll enjoy more. Cheers Franky

How precious that opportunity to cast a vote is in a free world democracy. There are many millions throughout the world who are denied it As your poem so forcefully suggests, it is a privilege we should never take for granted.

Strange to me (I'm 72), that I know adults who have never voted. You're point on in your observation that voting is privilege and a duty. I know I take the time to understand even the candidates at lower levels.

You make some very valid points herein, James. Voting is serious business, and it's not often an easy task to make the right decision among candidates that are at the mercy of media reports and campaign managers. Kudos for the light you shed here!

Hello Jesse,
You've written an excellent free verse poem on the one of the keys
to democracy. Only in a few countries in the history of the world have
the people had the right to vote for and elect their leaders.
The question is whether or not the people will throw away that right
or legislate it away in a blind attempt to assert their own beliefs on others.
The vitriol only increases.
Compromise is the key to longevity, but neither side acknowledges it.
Still, we must vote, vote, vote.
Best wishes to you.
Robert

I enjoyed reading this poem about casting your vote. It is a priviledge we Americans have. Keep up the great job writing your poems. Have a wonderful day after Thanksgiving.

Abraham Lincoln said that we have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. In order for this statement to be true and remain true. The people who are obligated to support the government by obeying its laws, not acting against it by siding with its enemies, paying duly levied taxes, etc. This is what identifies us as citizens. I also believe that we have the obligation to hold our elected leaders accountable for their actions, both in their actions on our behalf, and on actions that are against our benefit.

I think voting in the States isn't mandatory? In Oz, we get fined if we don't vote state or federal. It is most important to have your say. After all, it's the people voting for what they need. I'm glad you posted this. K xx
