There several noted literary techniques in this poem. Very few use similes because they often come off as cliche' or schmaltzy. The simile you use give a richness to your poem and is the crux of the poem. I like your regional, cultural dialect and concepts. There are several metaphors too. You have good strong allusions. I also enjoy your wordplay. This is very nice.

Liz, thank you for a very good review!

Well, I guess some day, you, too, will hand one of your grandchildren a box, probably not wrapped in newspaper (newspapers likely to become extinct before then), and when opened, he or she would have said, "What's this, Grandpa," if you hadn't read this review.

Hi there, and no wonder it won the contest on the day. Congratulations! It's beautifully written and so very atmospheric. I liked your free poem a lot. Yes, history is a wondrous thing and no better than heirlooms to tell the story. All best.Ulla:)))

Congratulations on winning the Free Verse Contest with this tribute to your grandfather. I relished the "watch" as a symbol of the lessons he taught and you continue to pass on to your grandchildren. Big cheers- Joan

What a wise man! I'm wondering if it's written about your own grandfather or maybe it's you, reflecting on life. It doesn't really matter. This is a splendid poem and just begs to be read aloud. Nice work. Hugs, Lou

I think you have a a winner, the nostalgia of this poem and the purity of the childhood memories; ""Life, it is like this watch,"
"I have to do my part to have the hands
go round and round."
Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest.

I'm not a free verse poetry fan but I liked yours. Using the watch as the prized possession won me over. Your poem made sense and made me remember my own grandpa. Good luck in the contest.

Hello,
I pray you are doing well this day. I like your poem about the history behind your grandpa's watch. I'm sure your learned much wisdom and lessons from your grandpa's stories about life. I like the way you received the watch at your graduation. I love that now you can share this beautiful story of your grandpa's watch with your grandchildren. How lovely? This was a very enjoyable read. I loved the photo you used also. Nicely done. Happy writing:-)

This is a lovely story written in poem format. It is great that your grandfather shared so much with you and that you can take that and share it with your own grandchildren.
