This 5-7-5, Stockmen Stories, has the right set up and frames a scene around a fire where the past glory days flare up in the flames and good times are kindle for friends by the fire.

Hello my friend

Beautiful entry for the 5-7-5 writing prompt contest. Good syllable count. Lovely presentation. The lines connect grammatically and helps to flow. Well done.

I love the imagery and double meanings you use. Your small poem tells a large story and paints a large picture. It conjures tradition and a way of life. Nice work.

Thanks for this terrific review. Standing around a fire after a hard day's work is a time for reminiscing and tall stories.

Aaaah, the cowboys out in the night... work hard by day, and great stories and food round the campfire! ;) A great one for the contest, anon - thanx so much for sharing! ;) Best of luck at the polls! ;)

Interesting topic. Picture matches text perfectly. Love the double meaning and the explanation of it. Learn a new thing everyday. I like the fact that it is regional. Aussies are interesting anytime. Wouldn't change a thing.
Thank you for the opportunity to review your poem.
Well done!

I enjoy your words in your poem and how you choose to express it so fluently . The image of the colors attracted my eyes of the cowboys . I love the color scheme of this image it is beautiful . Thanks for sharing .

This is really good. Your told an entire story with just three lines. Plus I learned a few things! I really enjoyed this one. It's definitely a good entry in the contest!!

Thanks for such a positive review. I never know whether to put explanatory notes in or not. Someone criticised me once for demeaning their intelligence to understand the poem on their own terms, but I am aware this writing site has a wide international readership, and what is obvious in one country might not be obvious to someone from another country. It'd be easier if we all spoke the same language - even English has many regional differences.

I love the explanatory notes. At first I felt weird writing the notes. But now I think it helps with better reviews! So I do them! People on here could be rough. But mostly everyone is kind. We are all on the same boat!!!

I always find other author's notes helpful too. I like reading a bit more background story.

I can remember spending a night bogged to my axles, 80 km north of Broken Hill, when, believe it or not, there had been heavy rain fall, we were heading towards sacred grounds at Mootwingie, telling stories by firelight. Under vivid outback stars, it was wonderful. Beautifully written my friend, beautifully written, good luck, blessings, Roy

You can't beat a clear outback night, storytelling beside a campfire under millions of stars.
    Thanks for your nice comments.

Oh, I love a clever 5-7-5 and this is a perfect example of one! So many of these are truly boring. LOVE this, I can just hear them... I'd give this a 6 if I had any more to give out!

I'm pleased you appreciate there's more to this poem than just putting down 17 syllables of blah. I agree with you that many offerings are boring... just stating facts or banal observations. I always try for a double meaning to get more in as a challenge to my own ingenuity - it often flies over readers' heads, so it is nice to discover you 'get it'.

I've received a few "unhappy" return comments for giving out 4's. It is crazy. I have given out a few 3's as I really think the bar can be raised on this form...
reply by the author on 08-May-2020
I totally agree. I bet people got grumpy about the 3's!! I chicken out with ones of that standard and just don't review them, because they either get angry or there is so much wrong with the poem it would take too long to explain it (and then they still might get angry at the suggested changes)... or else, why waste my time reading crap when there are so many other more enjoyable poems to appreciate? I guess it depends on how much we want to assist someone else, or to entertain ourselves.

I take note of those who aren't appreciative. :)

    They'll probably mute you!
reply by Margaret Bednar on 08-May-2020
Can they mute a comment? I'm new to this.

OH... I see click on their name and I see the option. Will I not see their poetry or does that mean I will not get a box to review? I see I can also private message there so conversations like this can happen :) This site does have a learning curve.
reply by the author on 08-May-2020
I've never used it, but i've been told there is a mute button and if someone feels they are getting negatively targeted they can block that person from reading their stuff, and therefore writing reviews about it. It can either be used negatively, a bit like snubbing someone, or as protection against a nutcase. I've heard that people have been kicked off the site for doing unjustified 'revenge' reviews if they don't agree with how someone has reviewed their work.

I've been on the site about 16 months and still learning what button does what... especially in the editing menu boxes.

    Yes, that makes sense.
