Earl,
Your excellent story on reading certainly conjures up many memories. Reading Treasure Island as a youth started me on a priceless journey of learning and fascination. Strong reading fueled my interest in writing. Your story is well written, has a warm home feeling. Your Mothers influence, school days reading and adult books. Your journey parallel's my own reading adventures. I enjoyed this read very much!
Blessings,
Richie b

This was a very beautiful short story. You have described your early passion for reading very well and took us on a journey as you experienced different novels. Great work!

Hello Friend,
Nice piece of Biographical Non-Fiction having lucid wording, captivating flow throughout from the beginning to the end, and beautifully depicting its theme.
This line is particularly noteworthy:
"I think when you get a kid to like and enjoy reading you have handed them the keys to the kingdom."
Lovely Attempt!
BEST OF LUCK in the contest.

This is an excellent story on why you like to read. What you have written points directly to your vision. It is clearly stated and most readers would have no problem comprehending your writing. Both of my parents read voraciously, and they did not discourage my siblings and me from reading. They just didn't read to us or push reading on us. Apparently the hunger to read among us was genetic.

That was really good. You picked a couple of my favourite authors there. Louis, I've read everyone he wrote, some twice. The Bible Story book, I bought for my sons, and enjoyed it so much. I'm the same as you when it comes to a car coming into a western book, totally puts me off. It was my father who that gave me my love of books and his father, my granddad. I think this is an excellent contest entry, and I wish you the best of luck! :)) Sandra xxx

Hello mystery writer. I enjoyed reading about your first, and continuing reading experiences. One thing that stood out to me is the eclectic nature of the things that you would read. Some people land in one genre and stay there. Your reading habits do not appear to fit that mold.

Excellent story and good luck in the contest.

I think this is a good entry for the "The Appeal of Books" contest.
This well written piece tells of a love of books starting at a young age.
Well done and I wish you good luck with the contest.

I enjoyed your story very much as it echoed my own experiences when growing up, except it was usually my dad who read stories and poems to me. We were always library-goers as a family and i remember my joy when i was allowed to borrow books from the adult section because i was such a good reader. For birthday presents, Mum always gave me the Australian Children's Book of The Year each year, while Dad made sure i read a lot of the old classics of his boyhood, like Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book.
Leon Uris was a favourite author also, plus i read anything by James Michener.

(Corrections: In this line there is a letter missing from a word: "One of the lists I would have submitted back the(n) was the Five Books..."
Also, pop a full stop on the last sentence.)

"My preferred genre when I started going to the library in school was biographies." Mine was either 'lost dogs' or 'murders.. Even at seven, I loved a good murder mystery. It would drive my mother crazy when I brought those books home from the library stuffed between 'the recommended book list' books.

I enjoyed the read.

Best of luck in the The Appeal of Books contest.
