Oh Robert, I missed this one and should not have done. We grew up, the three of us, without a dad. It really did affect my brother, who never knew a father. In a house with a mum and 2 sisters, it seemed to work. We never gave it a thought. It was OK while he was a toddler but it took it's toll as he grew up. Dad was killed in the war while Billy was a baby and had no remembrance of a dad at all. My brother and I were very close and I saw the effect it had on him....... enough said. Glad I saw this as I trawled through your work. Dorothy x

Hi Pam. You probably didn't see it because it was a blind entry for a contest. I don't do well in the site contests but have won quite a few blind contests. That tells me my writing is well received when people don't know I wrote it. :))) Thank you for your very positive and kind remarks about the content. I believe it is a VERY serious problem in our culture and society. My grandmother was quite special.

I know it was a blind contest, but I was glad to see your name on it.
No, I think the cash contests have a lot of entries, and it is tough to win. I don't enter many, and have never won one! Thanks for sharing the story.

You're welcome. I now only enter site contests if it is something I feel strongly about and want to write about it.

This is a touching and poignant entry for this contest. You managed to keep the verses lytical while conveying your message of the need boys have for a father, though you seem to have turned out fine, thanks to you grandma :) Good luck in the contest.

This is a poignant tribute to dads and boys with dads. The reader will be drawn in to identify with the speaker. Some will grieve with the speaker and possibly touch in to their resentments. Some will disagree. This is a painful account. I admire you for your courage in expressing this perspective.

I am sure your grandmother did the best she could, but boys (and I think girls too) need a daddy in their lives. There is something special about having a father who is strong, sensitive and caring and can be the role model for youngsters.
Best of luck in the contest.

Hello Debi. Thank you very much for your positive review and comments. I appreciate your comments regarding the family dynamics as well. Absence of fathers in the family this day and age is a serious cultural and social problem.

I like this. Thank God for a good Grandmother. I think that many a lad didn't have a father that was around yet here comes Grandma. My father said that if you were involved in creating the child, then, you're responsible for taking care of it. I said it in the user friendly version for all audiences. I child does need a father in their life though. Thanks for sharing this inspirational and well written work. Well done!

I loved these sweet words and I agree that all children should have a father, growing up without one very sad. Single parent families need much support, I enjoyed your verses and you have my vote, love Dolly x

that's very true, and a sad situation.
Also true and sad is the fact that little girls need a daddy, too.
My granddaughter grew up without her father in her life and it definitely influenced her and the way she thinks, today.
Grandmothers can't take the place of a dad, either, though we try to be the teasing, loving, spoiling, strong support she needs.

Hello pome lover. Thank you for your positive feedback and review. Your words are so true. Daddies are missing from the lives of millions of children in America. The result is the craziness and disfunction we are now seeing.

Yes I agree wholeheartedly - young boys need their daddy & dads need their little boys - a role model- too many kids today do not have a daddy to accompany them on their journey in their formative years - well portrayed here

Hello Zanya. Thank you very much for your positive review and great comments. You are right. Sons need a daddy that lives with them to teach them.
We have a major social problem because way too many boys grow up without fathers in the home.

    THANK YOU

What a beautiful poem! Your grandma must have been a special lady! It seems its the way it goes that Grandmas tend to pick the pieces up and fit the puzzle back together again. I taught mine to play baseball for little league, how to skate along with honor and respect for others. It would be nice if all boys had daddies, but thank God for Grandmas!

Hello Patty. My grandma is what got me here. I was a real character as a youngster but I never gave her any trouble. Our society is paying a huge price for the lack of fathers in the home.
Thank you for reading and reviewing my poem.

I agree with that. Boys need a dad. They don't need a father, they need a DAD!
