Thanks for sharing your family tradition. I like how you involve the children in the celebration.
I laughed at what was done with the fruitcake!
Question/Comment:
"Then you ice it." (Do you mean frost it? I wondered because I speed jello-making with ice. Sounds like a good recipe!)

Thanks for reviewing and yes, sometimes I forget, icing it here means frosting it elsewhere.

It is a shame commercialism butted in and was allowed a toehold into something that was meant to be outside the realm of the money changers in the Temple. Today it is a sad reflection of better times. This was beautiful Alie, all my love. Anne

Awwww thank you Anne for the wonderful review and the stars. I agree that it is a shame when commercialism weighs in so heavily in personal things. Luv u Alie

Hi Alie. We have had a "Jesus cake" each Christmas for years. I like that you've given the options to the kids to decide each year. I hope your Christmas was wonderful.
There is a typo to fix here:
"The twins, who were grandchildren, were (delete were) made two cakes with candles. Marilyn

What a lovely idea for the contest to share a wonderful family tradition! :) What's really great is that you started 'big' with traditions on a big scale (which some folks might not even know!!) -- well done, my lady!! ;) Thanx for sharing and good luck! ;)
Oh, and Merry Christmas to you too!! ;) :) Yvette

I love to here how other people spend their Christmas and we all have such different traditions. Here we bake rich fruit cakes and plumb puddings, served with brandy sauce or brandy butter. Merry Christmas to you, I enjoyed your happy birthday presentation here, love Dolly x

That is a very good way of reminding everyone that beyond all the commercial tat there is an age old reason for Christmas. I have known several people who would sing the 'Happy Birthday' song specifically to Jesus on the 25th December.

A wonderful Christmas tradition to pass of from family to family.
I, too, have wondered at the intricacies of a fruit cake. However, a friend of mine - from college, his parents (I think it was really his granddad) made a grand rum-fruit cake. We were only allowed one small slice. I think it was the only fruitcake I have heard of that was partitioned-out carefully so that there would be leftovers?
A fun read. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for reviewing and your great comments, perhaps the concern was the amount of rum in the cake, some can be potent. Holiday Blessings.

I enjoyed your contest entry, aryr. Your words read well with a great story. I like how this tradition started and what it means. So much commercialization of Christmas, but this poem reminds all of the real reason for the season. Your image choice is a good pairing with your well-chosen words. However, your words tell the story in a way that even if no picture had been included, readers could visualize one. Your tradition is great--evidence of how others have adopted it. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully with Love and Admiration. Jan

Hello aryr. That's really a cool story of Christmas traditions and gatherings. The narrative of your story was very good and it was easy to read and understand. I like the part of your story about celebrating the real reason for Christmas. Good luck in the contest. Robert
