Great descriptions -onyx eyes and velvet feathers - of the crow.
You do sound like you admire the crow Yvonne. They have a reputation when it comes to horror/thriller stories don't they. Lovely free verse
cheers,
valda

It's so unfair that they have such a reputation. They are lovely, caring, intelligent birds. Thanks for reviewing, Valda.

What a beautifully executed free verse, Yvonne. I really enjoyed how you structured this poem and will look to it as an example in January. Very well done.

Sounds like a bird lover speaking in this free verse poem. The crow(s) are described as beautiful and black with onyx eyes and velvet feathers, with a quality of timidity that might conceal talents but not their antics. I caught some 'f' alliteration in the last four lines or so. Nice share.

Thank you. They are lovely birds and highly intelligent. Their reputation is very unjust.

A fine piece of free verse writing. You have seen more than just black plumage here and for certain I know those rainbow colours do exist.

I wondered if an alteration to the order of the lines here would be beneficial. May be you have already considered it.

You have,
'The sheen of your wings
is a feathery rainbow
caught in sunlight.'

Does anything significant occur if you place the last line first?

'Caught in sunlight,
the sheen of your wings
is a feathery rainbow.'

I love your descriptive word choices, Yvonne. I could see this crow as I read your free verse. Your words/lines flow smoothly, and the color scheme and picture are perfect. Your poem has an air of mystery about it like I think of crows having, too. The font adds to that for me. Thanks for sharing. Respectfully with Love, Jan

Thank you for this very lovely review. I'm so glad I could make you 'see' this wonderful bird.

I agree that the crow is a fabulous bird (although not my favorite bird as they all are). Crows have lots of moxie and glistening black feathers that I admire--not to mention their raucous voice. A fine free verse for the club. Marilyn

They are highly intelligent birds, and have been pegged with a bad reputation totally undeserved! Thanks, Marilyn. 8-)

I can see by your verse that you admire the Crow and justly so from your description the visual assets demand our notice. I suppose when you think of them "baked in a pie" and when the pie was open "the birds began to fly" those would be apt antics. Though your poem is artful, you haven't convinced me.

Aww, now. They are highly intelligent and actually very timid birds. Literature hasn't done them justice. Thanks for reviewing. 8-)

You cannot be serious about crows. I've read that they're the smartest of birds, and they do look pretty against the snow. You describe them in such beautiful terms--their onyx eyes, their fun-loving attitude, their showy wings. Great alliteration "fabulous fowls." We have plenty of crows where I live (Terre Haute, IN) and there's even a crow committee that tries to get them to leave town. They love to congregate downtown, and the streets are filled with their droppings. We see plenty of them near us in winter weather, scoping out the trash bags. (Not to take away from your poem, but I'm not a crow fan.) judi

I'm sorry about that. I love crows and hate to see the reputation they've been given through literature and superstition. I appreciate your review, especially since you don't like them. 8-)

You're very welcome. If you had to watch where you walk on the sidewalks, maybe you wouldn't be quite so fond of them. I will grant you they are intelligent birds. judi

I quite understand your dilemma. We have the same trouble with the Canada Geese, but I still love them. 8-)
reply by judiverse on 13-Dec-2019
I think I'd be more tolerant of the geese. judi

What a great tribute to the crows! And you are such an expert that you could have chosen any bird but you chose the very common bird and showed us his talents and "love of fun" and beauty!

You're the first one I've received that doesn't hate them. Whew! I think they're such lovely creatures. I don't get any here because of my feral cat tribe, but my son has oodles come to his place.

They are really smart birds. I remember that some Japanese scientists taught them to play soccer put uniforms and everything!

I've seen them make tools to use when they couldn't reach something. I think they're amazing. I'd love to see them in little uniforms. lol

A murder of them is quite daunting but I agree that crows are magnificent birds and have a bad reputation. They always stick together and look after each other. I enjoyed your poem, especially: "Stripped of trust by mankind's unjust treatment." Truthful words, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly. Yes, they are not given their due. I think 'murder of crows' is a horrible name to give them.
