This is an effective poem in the free verse style meeting contest requirements. The picture highlights the message nicely. It surprises me that with your exotic background and traveling that you never got over your fear of snakes.

This free verse about a phobia, My Snake Phobia, builds on experiences involving the reptiles that would render most fearers of fangs to be uber-uncomfortable around the slithering, soulless serpents.

A good little life story about your snake phobia which I had too, once in Australia with its very dangerous venom snakes but about all my arachnophobia. Your poem is descriptive but you could work it out better using a standard acrostic scheme of " snake phobia" dividing it in two stanzas and filling in all with your military epiphanies. Have a nice day!

This must have been a frightening experience to see snakes that size! I would have been terrified and I fully understand your phobia here, a chilling write, love Dolly x

I have never seen anything like that, but I saw a few odd bugs up the Amazon!

Your excellent poem reminds me of a trip to Key West. A street attraction had a chair and big snakes and birds. My wife sat in the chair and he put a boa constrictor and a python around her neck. He started to put a cockatiel on her shoulder. He leaned away and said, "I don't mind the snakes, but I don't want that bird on me.

We each have our own little thing....I think the cockatiel would have stirred up hunger pangs. Lol

This is a well written free verse, my friend. I'm not afraid of snakes, spiders, or mice. But wasps--they are another story. They have no earthly reason to be here. Best wishes in the contest, my friend~Debbie

The author's words were frightful, clear and creative. The reader
thought about when she went down to her basement one day and
there was a snake hissing at her! The poem brought back memories!
The artwork was perfect and went well with this poem.

Oh no. I am sorry to hear about your snake fear. I don't really mind them, but I can't stand spiders so I get where you are coming from!! Good luck in the contest!

It always is something in our way that stirs our fears.

In my opinion, a thoroughly understandable piece for me - I too fear, perhaps even hate, snakes. This was succinct in its detail - descriptive in its free verse presentation and strikingly frightening image - fully compliant in its adherence to the prompt. Best wishes in the contest...
