I think what you are saying is that mature love is so very different, we have to put aside the feelings we had in youthful love, but we can take the anticipation with us. I think no matter how old we get, we can look forward to new love.

So true, we can go home again, but we can't stay. I haven't visited the farm where I grew up, but it would stir all sorts of memories if I did. Even though it wasn't fancy, it still leaves feelings of warmth and comfort. We have to move on, however, to make new memories. Beautifully worded, and the free verse flows smoothly. Visiting the old homestead can accomplish many things, it can exorcise past memories, whether they be good or horrific; they can make us cry over the things we have lost. It is a good thing to visit the past, but as you pointed out, you must not linger there. This poem is very unlike most of your posts, but I like it very much, it shows a side of you rarely seen, 'Ya old softy.' LOL.

This lovely, well-written poem is nostalgia at its best. I love to revisit the first homeplace I remember. The house is gone, but I can still see it. Revisiting old loves, old relationships, is more painful.

Wow! Really beautiful poem, Bill! It gives me a feeling of yearning and a kind of sad wishing for a past innocent love but as the narrator says, "we cannot stay."
