This is heartwarming. It's amazing what things can bring back memories and hold sentimental value. I love how, while painting a portrait of the role the door played in the stages of our son's life, you also so accurately described those stages with a few well-chosen, pointed words, from the small face placed against the door, to the Batman sandals, to the eye rolls. Yet, with each stage, your love and pride for your son glow in such a beautiful way. I hope your Marine does make it home safely, and I wish you luck in the contest.

Hey, Michele -- you have certainly made my day with this awesome review, ma'am -- thank you!! :) :) Our kiddos and what they decide to do with their lives are so very important to us... this was just my tribute to those who choose a bigger path than most! Take care out there and have a great week ahead! ;) Yvette

It was my pleasure, Yvette, and I'm glad I was able to make you smile. Thank you for taking it upon yourself to acknowledge those who, as you say, "choose a bigger path than most." Without them, we wouldn't have a future. You have a great week as well.

It both nostalgic and beautiful. It reminds us how. objects and homes can carry energy and trigger memories. This is a very tender and poignant poem.

I was wiping tears by the end of this gem. God Bless all the young men and women who choose that most difficult of paths...to defend our country, knowing they may be called to make the ultimate sacrifice. As a Mom I could so relate to wanting to keep THAT door until my service-member young man or woman re-entered and I could sigh "Welcome Home" as I thanked God.~Karenina

I admired your rhymed quatrains and parallel picture selection. I enjoyed the circularity with the front door and the progression of the son's growing up. Cheers- Joan

A very beautiful and well written poem. An emotion I felt was from selling the house where my kids grew up. The military service makes it more poignant. Good luck in the contest.

Very much liked your poem - but for my money - I do not like those storm doors - they slam too fast, catch fingers - much rather have a wood screen door - which we have cuz hubby decorated a plain wood screen- make it look old fashioned.
But - the military bound kids (and they are just kids) - what lies ahead for them. Prayers for them all t he time. My hubby joined army at 17 - prob. too young, but no work at home.
Poem is poignant and true for mothers everywhere.

Sorry you don't care for storm doors, Gail -- it just seemed to work for the focal point of this one. Please be sure to pass along my gratitude to your hubby for his 17-years of service... if he were here, I'd buy the two of you dinner! ;) Thanx for the review, ma'am! ;) Yvette

Thanks for the offer of dinner - actually my husband was in Army for 6 years - he joined at 17 - when we married, we were sent to New M. and Taiwan.

How I would slap a six on this if I had one. It should be showered with stars. What a fantastic piece down memory lane. My boys chose college and I had to sigh a sigh of relief, but my stepson did 7 years in the Marines and that was scary, especially in these unsure times. I do not have all the memories of his growing up, but surely can relate. This is beautifully done and what a way to celebrate the homecoming. I love it. Well done and Good Luck! Very enjoyable to read.

This is a wonderful poem. I could see each description from the chubby baby to a young man off to fight on foreign soil. I saw no errors, loved the story and hope you do well in the contest.
