You've said a mouthful! This modern age has given birth to the "ME ONLY" generation. It seems there are more cowards than real men, more selfish women than family-oriented. An excess of greed and too much to appreciate anything abounds. Everything centers around some big wheel getting profit regardless of the human cost. I am all for going back to "Back in the day."

LOL!! Oh my goodness...your ending there had me laughing... although, gotta say, we had some 'chick fights' too!! ;) :) A great offering, sir, and so very true in every respect, bar none!! ;) :) Thanx for sharing! Yvette

Back in the day --> Back in the day, [multiple times :) :)]

Thank you, so much for reading chick fights were just hair pulling and scratching. Except for one time two sister decide to see who could get the most clothing torn off in a fight. One was down to bra and panties the other just panties. For some reason, everyone was slow in reporting the fight to teachers.LOL

Good luck in the contest. This indeed brought back many, many memories of a time that represented growth but also peace. I sometimes think of the old folk when I was many years younger and what they had seen through the years. Sadly we are seeing the sad things, not the great things of advancement. Great job.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. I some times wonder how my grandparents and their parents survived. Could we?

You are most welcome, I am not sure if we could have, but it would be interesting and probably surprising.

Things have changed so much and not always for the better. And I don't think we have Macintosh apples here. Granny Smiths are still popular but Jonathons have mostly been replaced by newer varieties. Good luck in the contest.

Jonathon's have been outpaced by Fuji and other varites. Thank you for reading my little work.

Boy the way Glen Miller played,
Songs that made the hit parade,
Guys like us we had it made,
Those were the days,
And you know where you were then,
Girls were girls and men were men,
Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again,
Didn't need no welfare states
Everybody pulled his weight,
Gee our old Lasalle ran great,
Those were the days

Excellent story and analogies. You are right back in the day we were normal and we didn't t got often left and right. Back in the day we could joke without being called racist and we acted normally not like now. Good luck with your writing.

I am glad you liked my little tale. Things have changed more than I like to admit.

You describe simpler times for sure in your well-written and thought-provoking short piece.
Our connections were stronger then with family staying close by, church affiliations, loyalty to actually playing sport and not just watching professionals getting paid obscene amounts of money that gives some of them a sense of entitlement, no internet to get folks riled up and bullied, more respect for elders and leaders (who were usually worthy of respect), intact forests and clean rivers, not as much mental illness, minimal drug abuse etc etc.... I think there are just too many of us, with too many choices and easy access to too much unnecessary stuff... we have become rats chewing each other's tails.

Thank you for reading and reviewing and your insights. The mentally ill were with us but in hospitals and institutions and not on the streets.

Good thoughts, Rikki. Loved all your comparisons of then and now from apples, cars, school safety and saying the pledge. But I would change that very last sentence. Women do settle their differences in other ways than men but I wouldn't stereotype maleness and femaleness with fist fights and name-calling. I suggest using something more neutral like fashion preferences. Otherwise, it's a great piece and wish you well in the contest!

Thank you for reading and reviewing, When I was writing about the males and females I should have specified Teens for that was my focus. Boys had a problem and a couple of punches generally ended it. My girlfriend would go off on her friends in one breath and in the next they were hugging and crying, and it was my fault or some other guy because we didn't understand.

Lol. Okay, I get it. The whole gender confusion is such a mess today. I blame the media for deluding the kids to thinking they are something that they are not.

If only we could go back to such times and days. I think that technology has replaced simplicity and is one of the major causes of all of the change. I remember the days that you speak of well. In many places, you could keep your doors unlocked and you could come home and find the neighbor raiding your refrigerator and vice versa. You can count all of that out today. Thanks for sharing this trip back down memory lane. Well done!
