Ironically, I just read an article in a literary magazine that speaks against submitting poems with these subjects to poetry contests. The article stated that poems with these subjects are unlikely to win poetry contests, unless the poet brings original/innovative and unique approaches to these subjects-- bring something new to the table. I attempt to do such when writing about these subjects. Sometimes I succeed. Further, the article stated if the poet wishes to write any of these things--all of which are perfectly worth writing-maybe don't send them into contests.
You certainly have given FanStorians food for thought with your poem.
