Well done, my friend! It's not even a black and white thing any more - things like this happen due to differences in culture, religion, and political affiliations. Sadly, many folks out there feel that rights and freedoms belong only to those who think and look the same as they do. What a BORING world that would be, no? God in His infinite wisdom created variety and diversity in all things. We would do better to focus on how connected and "like" each other we are rather than dwell on the minor differences. Well done and thank you very much for sharing it.

Thank you for a great review. As it has been said before, we can live together as brothers or perish separately as fools.

This write is a great lesson. Thoughtless words do hurt and cause animosity between people. I know the 60's was an especially hard decade, and I know racism still goes on today, as well as many other types of prejudices.
I like your story. Your ending paragraph was educational and diplomatic. For the record, I have never said anything like that, and it would never occur to me to do so. We are all equal.
Great write!

The good news is that many of us learn how to not put our feet in our mouths by observing the mishaps of others, this is why it os surprising to me that someone is still making this mistake in judgement.

Well written example of ignorant things said by some people. i cannot, personally ever remember saying anything like this to anyone ever...and I am 80 yeas old. Our leader should learn to shut his mouth is all it amounts to. He cannot even speak properly. ever notice? Bless you, Nolan. Bob

If he ever takes the time to observe the way things should go, he would look so much better to even those who hate him. It is obvious to me that he rubs people the wrong way and then has the nerve to act as though he does not care. Not a smart thing to do as the leader of a whole country.

Ignorance always displays itself when it is allowed free reign.

I have been a female victim to this type of conversation from other females more than years can imagine. The first interaction with different races came in college. I was not polite like yourself, yet polite enough that my remarks were understood. The conversation is still real today, only the names of the persons are different. Like watching headline news. I appreciate you sharing with the FanStory community.

Hello MS BoClair. I am so sorry that you were treated so rudely. What people who do these kinds of things don't realize is that the hurt from this does not go away. The scars run deeply and affect us in ways not anticipated. Thank you for your review comments.

Wow! That would be a tough conversation to stay calm in. I would have to have stepped in if I'd been there and heard Steve make that stunning comment to Darren. I would likely be out of place, as Darren wouldn't need or want such backup, but I'd feel bad that Steve was such a dick.

I think that just to know that someone else cared enough to get involved would have been an encouragement. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I can say that it would have the world to me.

In my opinion, a stunning write in the fact that this type of issue still exists in certain parts of the country today, but is decreasing immeasurably, I feel comfortable in saying. I have always been confused by racial issues, because I never measured people by color, but by attitude and actions. I was raised by a father who served in the Ukrainian Diplomatic Corps in Canada and was exposed to people of different colors and languages from an early age. In retrospect, I believe I was more fortunate than my peers. Thank you for sharing this dramatic write...

Thank you for a wonderful review. I agree, early exposure to different cultures is always a positive experience. As the world continues to get smaller and smaller, more and more people of different colors, languages and cultures are going to bump up against each other and those who resent and resist this are going to find themselves becoming outcast outsiders with fewer and fewer friends and supporters.

You are very welcome indeed, and I think it's unfortunate we must depend on a shrinking world to recognize the fact we are all human regardless of our individual humanity. It should be a rationale conclusion. I agree, those who cannot, will be left behind in every way...Eve

I think that was the perfect response to this statement. Sometimes, people don't think and it comes across as...dumb? I don't even know what the right word would be. This country is definitely big enough for all of us and one shouldn't be treated like that. I hope you got through to this young man and he learned an important lesson that day.

The problem is that people who make statements like this, do not stop to think how what they are about to say will come off. The mature ones apologize, the immature ones insist that they said nothing wrong and continue to look like the fools that they are.

Very well written conversation, and it still happens. Why are people so insensitive I always wondered... Maybe they are insecure and afraid to lose their job. This conversation was great, especially the answers of Darren. Fia

Some people really do not see anything wrong in what they say to other people. These people have no experience in dealing with people from different cultures. The result is hurt feelings and sometimes even a physical altercation.
