I really love the title, artwork and subject of your poem. The overall presentation is beautiful.

You met the contest requirements of not using any 'A's'.

Zegel Poem: what is the meaning here? I'm interested. Please forgive my ignorance.

It appears you've written each line in 8 syllables, with the following rhyme scheme: aaa, bbba, ccca, ddda. Is this correct. It read so smoothly and was really beautiful.

This is a great contest entry, and I wish you the very best!

Thank you so much for your encouraging feedback! Here are the guidelines for the zegel format. Try it!

The zejel, pronounced SAY-hell, is a Spanish verse form, and it was made popular by the Andalusian poet Ibn Quzman.

-Thanks to Y.M. Roger for sharing her poem and information about this form.

Her poem is called "Surrender Not the Light" and can be found in her portfolio.

-This is information and criteria from her author notes:

-The zejel is a very old Spanish poetic form that is also likely an even older Arabic poetic form with an origination date somewhere between the ninth and eleventh centuries.

-Here are the basic rules for the zejel:

-First verse is a tercet with a 3 line stanza and an AAA rhyme scheme

-All other verses are quatrains of 4 line stanzas with an XXXA rhyme scheme, so the second stanza would be BBBA, third CCCA, fourth DDDA, and so on to the end of the poem...meaning the poem can continue with as many quatrains as you like.
-Lines are usually 8 syllables long .

This is a lovely poem embracing sunny-side-up of positivity. Isn't it an interesting challenge to choose words without the letter 'a'.. just shows it is possible to sustain lines without it, but quite a task. You have done well with the contest prompt.

This is a very encouraging poem of perseverance and not giving up or giving in. It flows and rhymes nicely. The only problem is that you used an "a" in the last line of the third verse. You can fix that easily by changing "high and low" to "high then low." Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for noticing the a. I copied and pasted the wrong draft! I appreciate your review and heads up.

I'm happy to help. Somebody did the same for me on my entry, and I'm just paying it forward. There are actually several poems that used the letter "a," so I guess you and I are just not that original. (LOL) Good luck in the contest.

Your Zegel poem is outstanding. I like the form. Your poem makes sense and is worded perfectly for theme. A fine entry for the contest. Yes, going with the flow is the best way to go. Marilyn

Wow. I looked at that prompt and thought, "How can one create a writing without the letter "A"? Well, you have done so, and the result is concise, makes sense, and is a lovely poem. Well done.

Such a challenge to write a poem without the letter "a"! But you've done it ably. I like the sense of perspective this poem suggests without preaching. I like the lines "The river running through our lives/does not determine who survives." If you re-read your last line, I think you want a period at the end and not a comma. That's the only fix I saw. Nice job.

These old eyes and fingers sometimes can't tell the difference between a comma and a period! thanks for the kind review and heads up!

This is a very clever work and a lot of talent is shown through writing something so difficult to construct. The rhyme is very good and the message is supportive of those seeking to understand more about themselves in order to develop a positive sense of self, be productive, and move ahead.
