The explanation after the poem makes the poem all that more touching, but shouldn't a poem be able to be its most effective self as a stand-alone piece? The loving tone displayed in your words is honest and true, and, for me, that "makes" the poem. I'm not sure that I understand the use of "Little time have I spent . . ." in the second stanza. I would think that that kind of "pondering" would be an everyday event. In the third stanza, the "Sit with little wonder . . ." seems appropriate since she has been the "ever-flowing fountain" for thirty-six years. Heartfelt and touching.

I love the rhythm tic theme in your poem and the symbolism with water and nourishing your heart. Your interesting way of defining decades makes envision a couple back in England. In a short poem you reflect on first love to when you take your last breath. Interesting delivery. Good luck in the contest.
