Great work with this Flash Fiction entry. That is exactly how my mother helped one of our sheep to birth its first baby. I sincerely wish you all the best in this contest.

Ah yes this is a great flash fiction. The one thing those little horses don't get the kid glove treatment that we humans do. lol
Great job Kace and I wish you much luck with the Contest Committee.

Thank you Gloria. So glad you enjoyed. One reader said, "I think I get the gist of it with your author's notes." Some Mother's do Have em'such a simple story? Huh?

A lovely tale of a child on a ranch (station) watching her favorite mare gives birth. Children around the world will spend as much time as necessary with an animal in trouble.

What a beautiful pair. Mare and colt! Running there. Love it. That birth happens often when you have animals. May daughter raises cattle and they are always having to help the cows birth. She has sheep and rabbits too. I think they do pretty well on their own. Enjoyed your poem Kaye. What a gorgeous mare in the picture! I love horses. Nancy:)

Thanks Nancy. Yep, country folks take it in their stride. Their animals come first always, that is how it should be. Horses are so Australian. i used to have a Riding School, the drought finished that; I donated six horses to Riding for the Disabled back in the 80's. I love them so much. Love, Kace.

I know when I've tried these flash fictions I am always amazed at just how few words 50 or 75 or 100 words are! It's TOUGH to establish a theme and set a tone and develop a story with enough tension to keep the reader interested and THEN give it a heck of an ending! Congrats! --You did it!--Karenina

Karenina, I look at flash fiction as a challenge. Don't write for them much because the big nobs always win! Thanks for reading. Kace XX

Good luck in the flash fiction contest Kay. I am so glad that Hettie was attentive as she was for a 10 year old and that things turned out fine for Windsong and her foal. Quick thinking by all, saved the day. Well done.

I love the photo that accompanies your charming story, Aussie. Any birth is a time of concern that all will be well, so I was very relieved at the successful outcome portrayed so nicely in your story. I enjoyed reading the details of how the men came to help. Good job in a short read.

What a lovely story, Kay, I often wonder what would happen if any of the wild horses in the New Forest where I live, gave birth on their own. I'm sure some must have died. There are hundreds in the forest so they can't all be found when this happens. I'm glad Hettie was there to raise the alarm, and that Buff had managed to turn the foal. Well done, this is a fabulous contest entry. Good luck! :)) Sandra xx
We are off to Spain for 10 days, so won't get on here much. :)) xxx

Hello Possum, Off to the sunny country, eh? Good for you. Thank you for reading my 100 words. I would have liked to extend the story, but we have to stay with the rules. Maybe you could take a laptop away with you? You are lucky to live near the forest, the ponies are protected I think. If it is called The New Forest? Have a super 10 days in sunny Spain. Love from your friend, Kay XX

Hi Kace. Oh, I'm so glad this story has a happy ending. So many animals suffer and die without the help they need from humans. Great job and best of luck in the contest. Marilyn
