How To Raise An Over-Achiever

When exceptional is all that's good enough

I thought this poem, in it's banging a fist against the table kind of rhythm, repetitions of phrases, captured the feeling of this instance on excellence that many parents drive into their kids these days, this idea of success at any cost. There was an insistence about it that drove the point home in all these repeating phrases. estory

I so love that you noticed this, story! You're the only one who mentioned it, but you are exactly correct! In fact, SO excellent are you as a reviewer, I believe I should make you an Honorary Saxman, you over-achiever, you!!

You made my night with this one. Thank you.

This could have been written about my daughter, my overachiever. I think she has calmed down now that she has children of her own (all boys) but it must drive her crazy as none of them are overachievers. :))))

Well done and good luck
Blessings
Janet

My daughter isn't an overachiever, either. But she's also a lot happy a person than I was at that age. And that's a life-affirming trade-off.

Thanks for this snippet of your life, Janet; I loved it.

Oh, my - makes me tired just reading! Artwork proves achievers can be downright ugly. Very clever poem for the contest and I wish you the best of luck...so achieve, win!!

you have a fun poem, this has a very colorful feel that brings good imagery to the readers mind with each verse.
You have a good message within encouraging always to strive for excellence, this is a positive thing as long as it is what the individual wants, but on the flip side, this can be a negative thing when being pushed to excel in something you really may have no interest in.
I like your choice of art work, as it shows deep thought and signs of power, definitely a nice fit for your work here. Your delivery is strong and sends the message well of striving for success with all you do, there are many overachievers in the world but each has a purpose and reason, You have done a wonderful job here, this is fun and I am sure many will enjoy this as well, Thank you for sharing, Mancub

A good motivational piece with a lot to say about succeeding. We are a society that is rather an achievement based and over-achieving seems to be sought to climb to the top in our world today. Achieving is a good thought to do our best, but over-achieving can also bring stress and anxiety that is not healthy. So, I would test your poem in that is it really wise to always over-achieve? Perhaps adding something about when to stop going overboard and learning to enter peace instead of striving but make it an even more effective piece. So, partly, I disagree, but I also agree with your message in terms of putting our best into everything, but to a certain degree until we know when to let go and slow down to enjoy life as well.

Thank you, Ross. Perhaps if my family name were longer than six letters (the prompt was to write an Acrostic using your family name) I could have delved deeper into the evils of over-achieving.

Good luck with your contest entry; different to say the least.
A good piece for young adults, I think. Don't know that the X will be accepted by the committee. I know you meant well using it. Liked it.

I like the illustration of superheroes. They are perfect for the poem. "Never, ever give up. Don't let Failure drink from your cup." Great words. They should be on a plaque somewhere. Well done!

Well, I have often wondered how well this works. I think it has more to do with the personality of the child. Mine are all so different- all grown now. My youngest has been a straight A student her entire school life and is continuing that trend in college. I have never had to telll her to study or complete an assignment. She is totally self motivated. Now, my other kids were not that way. Lol.
Interesting poem. No errors noted.
All the best,
Jan

Ditto. I was the only one who "took" to the family prototype. The others ones opted out in a variety of ways.

Thanks for this interesting slice of your life. I love this review.
