Oops. Poor little mite. I love the fact that he had to test everything with his finger after that. I suggest you do the same, if it comes to it, in the nursing home. This was a well-written, amusing (sorry to find your child's pain funny, but it WAS, and he wasn't permanently injured) tale, and I'm sure many a harassed parent has similar stories. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for reviewing my piece. I know what you mean about "many harrassed parents" having similar stories. Parents have a tough job raising children. I know along the way I constantly questioned how I was doing and if I was scarring them for life. Both of my children turned out extremely well, so I guess no permanent damage was done. However, this incident with my son has haunted me for decades.
And yes, I will remember the finger testing if it comes down to his having to feed me.

Oh, I can only imagine your thoughts once you realized your son was in pain and his mouth was burning. At first I was so scared he was going to start choking or be allergic to something in the food, but your story offered a surprise twist that ends up with a happier ending (thank goodness). I bet it was tough to watch him touch-test all your foods...Jell-O, too.

Yes I was panicked when I saw him in so much distress. Once the milk was in his little mouth he was able to take a breath. I have always been so guilt ridden about this incident. It was something though, for him to take charge of what I was putting in his mouth from that moment on. He always was a smart kid. I definitely had to rebuild my trust with him.
Thank you for your kind review.

Oh dear, I'm horrified, as you must be, but at the same time trying not to laugh at your ending. Just do as your very clever child did for a longtime after if he ends up feeding you-- put your finger in the food first. LOL.

Wonderful story! Six-worthy, if I only had one!

Dear Mystery Writer,

Oh, my! I can only imagine the look on your son's face - you explained/described it so well! Bless both your hearts! And I HATE that he seemed to lose his faith in you -- I know how that must have stung. Thanks for sharing and much luck in the voting!

Wow! I guess for sure you were on the kids do not trust list from that day on. He was a quick learner that's for sure. Nice work up for this story and one you will never ever forget!

You are so right, it is something I will not forget. I was on his do not trust list for a short while, but then he finally started trusting me again.
    Thanks for your review!

This was a great read. I can just imagine the guilt that you must have felt although it was an easy enough mistake to make. You are very brave to tell all. I wish you lots of luck in the competition. Cheers. Jen.

I was horrified and it has stuck with me all these years later. You can bet it never happened again.

That's priceless, simply priceless. Children learn so fast and are so smart and funny. I can see the lad testing everything after that unpleasant experience. Bless his heart. That does sound like a memorable experience and I enjoyed reading this. Well done!

Yes, kids are extremely bright and my son was, as I stated in the essay, a very quick study.

Your son hasn't warned your grandchildren to stay away from the mashed potatoes has he? What a Nice little story from your past. Good luck in the contest.

Not sure if he has warned my granddaughter off mashed potatoes, but he might have warned her off of letting me give them to her directly.

Happy you enjoyed the piece. Thanks for taking time to read it.

This was awesome to read! Thank you for sharing this memory with us on FS! You made me laugh when you said his mother the moron; you are too funny! Don't be too hard on yourself though, you meant well and how many times parents make boo boos with their children. Some kids run into furniture so someone might think they are child abused rather than an out of control rascal! I love how your son would test his food with his finger and not take a chance! Well, that's one way to teach him not to eat hot food or touch a hot stove for that matter! I also like your comment on possible revenge once you are a senior needing him to feed you but hopefully he will be forgiving if not forgetful of this early childhood event. Well done!!

So glad you enjoyed the piece and thank you so much for the six rating.
You are so right that we as parents do make a few boo boos along the way. But how much more fun and interesting life is with children in it.

Most definitely! They are a gift from God and ours to borrow for a little while. I have two cats, my furry children but I am a great aunt to my nephew's son and he is in constant motion and is a chow hound! You had a great deliverance and I thank you so much for sharing your story as it can happen to the best of us. : )

Hello!

This piece really struck me. I enjoyed the description in the beginning and I think the way you build up situations with words is your forte. The ending of the essay is heartwarming and clearly the most special part.

Suggestions:

* Most of the times the word "finally" is unnecessary. This is the case for the second paragraph.

* I wonder if in this context, "already" is a better word than "obviously." (4th paragraph).

*The third and fifth sentences of the fourth paragraph are conveying the same message and I felt they were redundant.

Cheers!
