Wow! So rechabite, which I never heard of, stems from Rechab. I did not know that drinking was prohibited anywhere in the Bible since Jesus turned water to wine and since Catholics use wine in communion. I know that the Bible belt extreme churches in Alabama prohibit drinking and dancing. They had to get those ideas from somewhere.
I digress. I do not find your poem offensive at all. It's great humor. More than a little true.

You know what they say about why Baptists are against premarital sex, Debbie.... it's because it's been known to lead to dancing! :) Many thanks for the lovely review, Craig

That's funny. I've not heard that one. This is a very stupid question, but do any of Australia's churches speak in tongues or handle snakes. We have a lot of these in Alabama. I always thought it was peculiar to the South. Maybe not though.

I think "speaking in tongues", along with "faith healing" are common in charismatic/pentecostal churches everywhere, Debbie, so the answer is "yes" to that one. I'm not aware of the snake handling going on out here, but we have some really nasty ones, so anyone silly enough to try probably wouldn't last long. They all are good at dishing out the snake oil though ;-)

Interesting name. We've been reading Jeremiah lately and haven't gotten to that passage yet. Jeremiah has beautiful poetic passages and other parts could probably drive one to drink.

Oh Craig, you know they say not to poke a bear, right? You are definitely having a bit of sport with the religious crowd in this write. I am not sure what form this is but I like the flow and use of rhyming with Rechabite and might. Excellent write (I rhymed).

Maybe just the tiniest bit, Pam ;-)

I don't know what form it is either, just a pattern that popped into my head. That doesn't mean I invented it, I probably heard it somewhere and it stuck.

Thanks for the kind comments, I won't tell anyone you rhymed!

Labor with two human infants was tough enough...I will refrain from any thought of "having a cow" (although I did chuckle)--- Hey, you taught me a new word (guess which one!) and yes, it was a bit of poetic fun... a smile on the Sabbath!

A very well-written Limerick. I prefer to stay away from alcoholic drinks because it makes my head spinning from the first sip until the glass is empty and then it continues for about an hour or until I fall asleep.

Well, I can see why you would prefer not to imbibe, Sandra. Many thanks, Craig

This is a good social commentary, Craig, on how complicated some religions can be and the who everyone wants to convert those to their religion. Good job. I enjoyed reading it. Your lines read smoothly, the picture is a good pairing, and you make a valid point. Thanks for sharing. Jan

This is witty if you don't take it seriously. I am an Eucharistic minister and I sometimes feel weird giving the wine to children but I do find a lot of adults refuse the wine. Most things the have strong tenets can drive you to drink if you let them.

Keep writing

Now there's a word to remember ... "Rechabite". LOL ... no, I won't have a cow, as I quite agree with the sentiments you've expressed here, Craig. I honestly believe that many of the world's woes can be directly attributed to religious fanaticism.

Perfect pairing of picture and poem, and excellent rhyming. Well done!

Cheers,
Connie

Thanks so much, Connie. It was quite hard to find that picture. Not that there was any shortage of priests having a tipple... there were plenty, but they all demanded payment. Seems photos of drunken clerics are in high demand lol

LOL! All those rules and regs pose a problem, don't they? I don't know about other religions, but Catholic (of which I am one) has a lot of them. I'm a rechabite. Nice rhyming in this fun poem. Marilyn
