Internet Danger

Your warning is appropriate now and will remain relevant without expiration. I'm glad you recognized the danger and stopped it before any real harm was done. Your brief list of danger signs is helpful for those who were less aware, and mentioning the steps you took to "shut it down" is equally useful advice. Superb.
Personally, I have never had, and never will have, ANY presence on "social media" -- not even to view a post (text and/or video) not available any other way. When the function of Facebook was first announced, I instantly realized that it was a scam to prompt people to reveal more and more details of their lives, including whatever they were doing and wherever they were (and with whom) moment by moment. The data so collected creates a detailed dossier on each user, which can be sold or otherwise transferred for marketing and/or more nefarious purposes. That such sites can be used (or hacked) by individuals (and/or governments -- foreign or domestic) for evil purpose just adds to their repulsiveness.
Even FanStory membership has its risks; but stalkers here can be kicked out by Tom Ens if a member provides him with the evidence, especially if muting the person seems to be insufficient. In any case, a member can choose to avoid specificity in both birth date and location, plus either omit a Profile photo or use one not showing the member's face.
It is also wise NOT to use a public wi-fi connection unless you have appropriate security software (including encryption) in place in advance. If a would-be burglar (or burglar's accomplice) knows you are not home, your home is vulnerable. Also, ANY banking or internet purchasing over wi-fi places your accounts in danger of misuse from fraudulent purchases, etc.
There's another risk very few homeowners know about -- secret theft of the title on your home, then either draining the equity or using it as collateral for fraudulent loans, leaving you with all resultant bills. Your home title is public record available to anyone. Neither identity theft protection nor title insurance protects you from this. Go here to see the ONE way to protect yourself for just $14.99 per month (NOT a contract -- quit at any time):

WalkerMan, you know my name, may I ask yours?

Yes -- but you have it, as I have been signing it to my responses to your replies. Some of my more recent posts show my last name in a Copyright line at the bottom of a poem, as most of my poems are in my literary art book on which my real name shows as author. -- Mike

Dear Missy,
In excellent presentation, illustration, grammar, diction, and title, you've shared an importantly impacting message we all should heed and keep mindful of while surfing, messaging, and whom we let into out personal space. Under the veil of cyberspace, one never knows if the person is whom or what they claim to be.
I truly regret this unfortunate situation happened to someone as kind, giving, and trusting as you. And, though it's a hard lesson, I am sure it is one you will never forget.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing your invaluable information and warning for the benefit of us all.
Bless you, Dear Friend ... how sincerely happy I am you're alright now.
Thank you so much for sharing and being You! ~ Richard : )

Thank you for writing this to warn us about this. I am so sorry this happened to you. You used very good descriptive words and the imagery you chose to go with your words was great too. I am glad you are o.k. my friend! Blessings, Teri

I guess that could happen here as well. I have met some super folk of both genders on this site and quite a few weirdos as well. But that is to be expected on a site of writers particulalry poets. I mean to say we have to be weird to write like that don't we? I mean I am even talking in five line bursts with pivots and life is one long satori these days.
Be warned - we know what you write!
Spooky Halloween.

Very good story and a very Brilliant warning. I play on a game site, also and have come across a few scum bags, too. You really have to be careful to you carry on a conversation with more than twice. And be careful of people who wants a picture of you or any personal information. Glad all turned out well . You made the right choice.

Thank you Linda. It?s hard for me to believe trying to be nice was the cause of what happened, but it taught me a valuable lesson.

Wow.... some scary, worrisome stuff. I don't partake in any social media and that's a good reason not too.
I hope all is better now that it's "shut down" as you wrote.
These scam telephone calls are another worry we need to be aware of. My wife almost got suckered into an IRS scam. We got the police involved immediately.
Best of luck, John

Oh my gosh, girl! Wow! Thanks for sharing your story. This is scary. I know this world is so weird and full of shady people. It's sad but you just can't hardly trust anyone. I don't. I have had many people stab me in the back (not literally) but you know what I mean. They want to be your friend so they can destroy you later. I guess that's why I don't have many friends. If you manage to have one person in this world you can trust... you are very lucky.
Take care,
Shana :)

Hi Missy. This is a timely post that may help other trusting persons. Most of us are trusting and MAY reveal too much of ourselves on on-line sites. We may be coming from a friendship POV while the other person isn't. I'm glad you got yourself successfully freed from it. Marilyn
