There will many readers who will identify with this account. Some will have done the same, some will be parents. Some will be the child 'born out of wedlock'. Have you come across where the child was thought to sibling of who turns out...they are actually a child 'born out of wedlock'. There were a lot of shame filled people 'back then', but what was the shame, how did it develop? Who invented it? How did it multiply? Why is it necessary that people continue to sentence themselves for some invented taboo. Some may be able to reflect upon their useless heavy shame, and heal.

Thank you for your insightful review. It took a long time but I have finally gotten past these issues and live in relative peace now. We can beat ourselves up forever and it won't change the past.n All it will do is keep us in misery.

You've packed a lot of emotion into 50 words! I think that we can all identify with disappointing our father in some way. Yours may have been a crime for the times, however love happens. I am invested enough in this short write to hope for a reconciliation before your father's passing. A great job pulling emotion from the reader. And all in 50 words! Great job!

Thank you. My father passed away in 1966 but he did forgive me. I never told him I was sorry and have always felt bad about that.

This is true and even today this would be hurtful to a father and not being able to make peace before death is the worst punishment for this deed, a resonating and poignant flash fiction, love Dolly x

I'm sure he has forgiven you, and sorry that you live with this regret. We all make mistakes and darn, we can't take many of them back. Powerful and gritty short work here.

Thank you. Dad did forgive me before he passed away. I always felt bad because I never told him I was sorry for the pain I caused him and mom.

And so you will. I will not condemn you. You have done that for yourself. If your story is true, you must draw the line now, and live your life from this day forward.
The one forgiving person should be your father, and he has probably done that.

Thanks. Yep, you're right. My father did forgive me before he died. It is me that always carried the guilt for not telling dad I was sorry.

A parent always loves their child, and will forgive them. It would hurt to watch your child do something that they shouldn't, most parents see it as their failings in their teaching. This is a great story, everything told in those few words. Excellent contest entry. Well done and good luck! :)) Sandra xx

If this story is true, I don't think you should feel guilt. Although it was not an acceptable affair. A child is a child and parents should always stand by their children. I was abandoned because I was pregnant but I don't feel guilty. Best wishes and good luck in the competition. Jen,

Thank you. My father never abandoned me and forgave me at once. It is me who never admitted I was wrong and told him I was sorry. My dad cried when I married the creep.

I wouldn't say it's a common thing now, but it would disappoint any loving father. I hope your marriage worked out at least. Your father probably forgave you a long time ago. Now, you need to forgive yourself.

Thank you. Things are different now than they were in the sixties. It seems as many couples live together as there are married. When they get tired of their partner they move on to the next one. I see it a lot in our small town.

Aw, I am so sorry you have to carry that with you, but like they say on "Castle", the heart wants what it wants. I, too, carry the guilt of sneaking out my entire 17th year, then dropping the bomb on the people who were kind enough to raise me once I turned 18. But, love holds no grievances, and we all-in-all will still love each other and wish each other happiness.

Thank you. I think we all have some skeleton in the closet we don't admire.
