A complicated theme addressed in this poem, with reflection on the claim for those who have the luck to be born in the right place, and how that location is protected. Foreign bodies invading, versus, human beings looking to find a safe place to live, and how do you balance the two. Empathy and practicality, safety and sharing, fear and love.
In this poem, the main thread is a comparison with places that need to separate physical borders, build the wall, another brick in a wall. In this example, we get an idea that the wall doesn't have to be a wall, to still find that how sometimes there is a barrier emanating from the human heart.

Every country has staunch anti-refugeeists, Craig. That said you guys are lucky because you have new fangled water walls. You should forward that suggestion to the POTUS. He's pretty retro in his policies so a water wall might just go with the vintage water beds.

Every country has staunch anti-refugeeists, Craig. That said you guys are lucky because you have new fangled water walls. You should forward that suggestion to the POTUS. He's pretty retro in his policies so a water wall might just go with the vintage water beds.

I agree with you that the countries that can, should take in refugees fleeing from dangerous places. The U.S. is inundated by people who come because they want to take advantage of the social resources available here. States like California had times of being bankrupt.
I care about the people I've come to know who have come illegally, and they have now received citizenship. [Something that the US Government does occasionally after so many years.] If only they had taken advantage of the legal means to come to work in the U.S.! It would have been safer for them and they wouldn't need have lived in fear.
Immigrants to your country have an even more dangerous journey!

Thanks very much, Helen. It's not an easy problem. But one gets the impression that here, and I suspect it's not all that different there, many people just don't like to share with people who, by an accident of birth, happened to be born somewhere else. It's not like anyone has any say in where they are born.

Hi Craig, first of all I want to say that I like your poem and you touch on a huge problem. A problem we are well acquainted with here in Europe. I live in Spain, and we have a lot of illegal entries, which sole purpose is to seek a better life. Many are sent back, and rightfully so. Their lives are in no danger and we can't be expected to absorb them all. Syria is a whole different kettle of fish, which I'm not going into here. Would take up several pages. I agree with you in principle. Great word you've incorporated. All best. Ulla:))

Asylum IS granted to legit comers, but no country can take every person in that storms its borders. Anyone who lives in border states will tell you (and I lived in one--California) they simply do not have the resources to provide for such numbers who require health care, housing, education, and other forms of welfare. Corrupt govs have to provide for their own citizens, but they don't, so those people try to relocate to a better place. Who can blame them? Simply put, we cannot withstand such numbers. Marilyn

This is a very cleverly crafted poem. Immigration is a hot issue right now, so I like how you didn't get on a soapbox and preach. You simply stayed how immigration is encountered in Australia. You kept it factual and fair and non-political. For that , you deserve 7 stars! I love poetry with a definite rhythm. Somehow it gets the message on my mind easier, lol! Great work! A very well-written Limerick. We all would love to welcome immigrants that come into our countries legally, but when they want to sneak in, with ill intentions they can just as well turn around and go back where they are coming from.

If my life, and the life of my family were in danger, if a war that was not my doing threatened to kill the people I love most, I might go where I thought it was safe. And if I couldn't get legal approval, I'd do it "illegally". It is the view of the United Nations that refugees are not criminals. Thanks for reviewing, Sandra.
