Hi, Craig,

LOL! I wonder who he gave his 'first best bed' to. This is a lovely way to use the word, parthian. Your final wishes are certainly your parting shot. Thank you for sharing this and giving me my morning chuckle.

Wow Craig, what a posthumous bird to a spouse! I liked how you mixed the word of the day with some literary history as well. Good use of a short form as well

Thanks so much, Pam. Yep, I'd say they definitely weren't on the greatest of terms, judging by that :)

You use such interesting facts (or suggestions) in your poems, Craig. These details make them so enjoyable. I will probably forget Parthian, but not "second best bed."
This was a fun post.

Thanks once again, Debbie. It's funny. In my house, we have decided since we almost never have visitors (the outlaws being too old and frail to travel now), we have no real need for a permanent spare bedroom. So, I have been trying to decide for weeks now which is our "second best bed", to make room for a study. I am hopeless at the most trivial decisions!

With Mom living with us now, my daughter here for a year, my sister-in-law staying frequently, my son and fiancé visiting occasionally from New York, we need third and fourth beds at least. Or, hotel rooms.

A great 5-7-5, and one which has a very interesting back-story. I didn't know about William Shakespeare's slightly spiteful side - but what a powerful parthian shot indeed!

Haaaaaaaaa, now this is just hilarious, not even the Captain's bed, or the cat's bed, the second best?

Well wherever there's a will there's a bunch of lousy relatives.

Great job, Craig. :)

Oh, that's so sad. I guess that relationship was that bad. I like how you used "Parthian shot" as naturally as one would saying, "parting shot," which doesn't sound quite as eloquent.

Thanks Helen. It does seem that they weren't on the best of terms. Cheers, Craig

Thanks for the notes, Craig. I did not know about the will. Good job on your 575--correct syllable per line, good topic, great picture, reads smoothly. I enjoyed reading it. Jan

Interesting. I guess his passions found a home elsewhere. Their relationship ended badly and maybe for good reason. I think lots of couples end their relationship with a parting shot. Excellent job with your poem and the author's note. Marilyn

Some have suggested otherwise, but the consensus seems to be that he was making his displeasure known. Many thanks, Marilyn.

Yeah -- that definitely indicates that she was not even close to being in good graces...I mean, let's be honest here, it was rumored he was not sleeping with her in the marital way when he was alive, and here we have him making sure she STILL did not warm the sheets of his bed even after he was cold and dead!! :) I believe the reaction to that kind of a 'parthian' would be: "daaaayum!" :) :)
Thanx for sharing! :) Yvette

LOL I can just picture Anne letting rip in a long, southern drawl. Either that or, "We are not amused!" :) Thanks, Yvette.

A very well-written 5-7-5 poem. An interesting fact about William Shakespears's personal life. He disinherited his own wife and divide his assets between their two daughters.
