Well this is pretty sound advice, Craig. I can imagine more than a few barns have gone up in flames due to a mishandled lantern.

Superb metre and rhyme and a terrific story too. :))

Much enjoyed.

Thanks very much, Gloria. I think you might well be correct that it's not the only time such a thing has happened. Always grateful, Craig

Hi Craig. I have been ill and have gotten way behind in reviewing. I am sorry if I needed some of yours. Nice word today. It makes sense since it begins with blunder. I guess the cow lifted her front leg and gave the lantern a whack. I am assuming the cow perished from her owner's carelessness. Good job. Thank you for sharing

Sorry to hear you haven't been well, Pam. Hope you are feeling somewhat better. I don't know what happened to the cow, but my guess would probably be the same as yours. Many thanks for reviewing :) Craig

Oh my! I didn't know that was the cause. Well done verses with music, too. Although we can laugh about it now, it does make one pause to think the domino effect of one small act. (I'm sure the drought and all the wood and the unavailability of enough firefighters also helped. Poor cow.)

I haven't heard the fate of the cow, but I assume it wouldn't have been anything good. Many thanks, Helen. Craig

Poor Mrs. O'Leary's cow has been made famous with the tale told over and over. What about the Mrs. herself who decided to get a glass of warm milk before going to bed? Oh well. She is just a blunder-a-whack. Very good pace, rhyming and word choices in this poem. Marilyn

Thanks so much, Marilyn. I don't know the fate of Mrs O'Leary's cow, or the lady herself. Cheers, Craig

Hi Graig. This is interesting. As I've grown up in Europe, I've never heard about this, and I read it with great interest. What a disaster to have befallen so many. A lovely poem and an educational one at the same time. I like it. All the best. Ulla:))

Thanks so much, Ulla. I remember learning the song as a child, and I'm a lot further from Chicago than you would have been in Europe. I guess it's the language, more than the distance, that governs what we learn as kids :) Cheers, Craig

Oh NO! (Excellent poem, Craig, and I love the new term!)

So careless, that damn dame, old Mrs. O'Leary!
I woulda, I coulda, been burned -- I was bleary!
I went to my bed about midnight-- so weary!
And now I'm just sobbing-- my eyes are all teary!

That poor, faithful cow -- thru the night, it was lowing!
I honestly think that we all should be stowing
a pail and some water-- an old garden hose
inside of our bedrooms, for really -- who knows?

Thank you, Yvette. I appreciate the lovely comments. Today's write won't be quite so lighthearted, but variety is a good thing, right? lol Most grateful -- Craig.

Hi, Craig,

I've often heard this story. Can you imagine that a cow could start a fire that would be responsible for the deaths of so many and an incident that would be talked about for centuries?

Now, blunder-a-whack is one of those words I MUST find a use for in my writing.

Thank you for sharing,

~MP~

Hi Craig, a good parable poem about how insensitivity and carelessness can harm the world around us. I liked the clever incorporation of the daily word, and liked the use of the historical Chicago fire to illustrate the point. Good comment!
