Lol! It's spider season here but we don't have many poisonous ones. We did see a large spider and a smaller spider in the same web, then the smaller one was gone. Poor guy. What a life spiders have.

Female Black Widow Spiders are a ruthless lot, mate.
They are also five times the size of their male counterparts.
I know we've all heard of losing our heads over a potential mate or some bird we're especially fond of.
But Black Widows take that to an entirely new level...if ya know what I'm sayin'?

Ha ha, this reminds me of a Pedro Almodovar movie I saw years ago. Where on earth did you find that photo, by the way? It is perfect for your poem. You Aussies can keep your spiders, thank you very much. Great job with this poem (hexameter?) That is a great meter for storytelling - including cautionary tales!

Hi Craig. I know of the Australian Red backed spiders. They can kill a man. Most people would survive a black widow's bite with antivenom as long as you are near a hospital. Praying mantis usually dispatch of redbqcked spiders by decapitating then. But the mantis is not immun against a spider's silk. A researcher found a praying mantis and put it into a tank and then put a red backed spider in the tank. Like a terrarium tank. The poor mantis had no clue and was preening itself. Then it noticed the spider and went to attack. But meanwhile the spider had laid down some silk and the mantis' leg got stuck in it. So this time the spider won. This is the video in case you have the stomach for it. I had to turn it off before death occurred. Squeamish. I liked your poem. I am allergic to insect venom, so I might not survive an attack by either red and black spider. Thank you for sharing

I understand where you are coming from, Pam. I'm allergic as well. I develop a huge lump if bitten by a flea or mosquito. I can't walk for a week if I step on a bee, my foot swells to the size of a football. (The last, and probably about 4th, time that happened was as a child). I suspect the effect now would be even worse. If I ever get bitten by any one of dozens of spider or snake species I've got right here on my little plot of land, don't even bother with the hospital, there won't be time lol

You should buy an epi pen. I think allergic reactions I think get worse each time. I went into anaphylactic shock. You might have had a lesser version but it is deadly. An epi pen could save your life. My arm size increased at least threefold from a bite on a finger and I could not breathe very well. I was not even aware that I was having trouble breathing. Insidious. I even swell up with mosquito and flea mites and ant bites.

Hi Pam,

Yes, I think the epipen is a good idea. I've thought about it a number of times, but haven't got around to it. Of course, after the event will be too late.

That video went on for hours. I didn't watch it all, as, apart from anything else, it was quite boring. Not to mention that just because nature can be cruel is not a good reason, in my view, to give it a helping hand. I wasn't surprised at the end result.

I thought the mantis would win. That is the only reason I watched it. It was posted on Facebook. An epipen administered at home after the bite will maybe save your life. See ya
