A tremendous story in your poem. You make a great contrast between the setting of the upscale restaurant and the homeless person. Your rhyming couplets are excellent. I can imagine the "personal poems for one dollar" would get your attention. I recently read a poem from Jan about the homeless, and she commented that many people turn their heads or walk away from the homeless. It's wonderful that you do your Thanksgiving dinners for the three homeless people. Be careful, though, as some of these homeless people have psychiatric issues and you don't know which way they may turn. judi

Wow the person for whom this poem is written sounds like one of life's true angels and I can see why you felt you must honour her with this poem. Her story is amazing and humbling, the way she helps vulnerable people struggling with mental illness and who often have nowhere else to turn to. Mental illness is still so often misunderstood and not talked about enough, so I love that this lady has seen the beauty in these unique individuals. Thanks for sharing her story with your poem and detailed notes x

Jan is a true angel and this world needs all that we can get... changing the world one person at a time. The mental illness has a large percentage of people in the homeless community... It is heart breaking... thanks so much kiddo. yours, diana

This is truly a lovely poem honoring this woman's work! Your word choice is perfect and really serves to separate those who have from those who do not. Cafe, lavished, coiffed, expensive rags -- all perfect. On reading closer, I'm a little bit torn with how to take the subject's interaction with the homeless individuals in the poem. She's fearful of the first, who's angry (and rightfully so) then the second takes the $20 and runs... She seems to have realized that "my cares are trivial and few" but then her interactions with these individuals I think she wants to help seem difficult at best... which might just be how it is, before you get to sit down to lunch and learn that they are human and have stories etc... This was definitely thought provoking and excellent tribute!

I enjoyed the poem even before I read your bottom notes. You didn't just write a poem you live it! I'm not sure how many people who voice their concern for the homeless actually would take them to eat, but you do. They talk the talk, you walk the walk. Thank you for sharing this with us!

You did a great job with your contest entry, Artasylum. Your words flow well with a story that is unique. I admire you for your 'mission.' You are special to treat the homeless as real people. Your notes were awesome. Thank you for sharing and caring. Jan

A very well-written rhyming poem about a very special lunch with a very special person who are homeless and need a helping hand to feed himself and his family.
