A very well-written heartfelt poem. When a couple lives happily for many years, the one who stays behind hold on to the memories they made together and find comfort in that, no need to cry anymore, we will meet again.

I think you capture this grieving widower very well in this poem. We get a vivid picture of his regimen NOW that she's gone and can easily picture those lipsticks "standing tall," the orderly clothes with her lingering scent, the slippers and that puffed pillow. I like that you chose to write iambic tetrameter quatrains with ABCB rhyme. Very poignant portrait. Rod

So real and authentic the emotion portrayed - the little details of every day that made life so meaningful are now sources of grief - well portrayed - reawakens my own grief on the death of my beloved husband a couple of years ago - never goes away !

It's alarming how many old folks die soon after losing a long-term mate. I block a lot of memories, not of the marriage but of the first few years after the wife died, a time not worth remembering. Excellent poem.

This was touching and beautiful the emptiness now she is gone, yet he has traces of her everywhere and within his mind are all those happy memories.

Connie,

This is a marvelous poem and tribute to 65 years (!!) of marriage. I bet if you'd been in the man's actual head, you couldn't have expressed these feelings much better. Truly a love poem of real life. You should have entered it in that contest!

Thanks!

This brought back so many memories of the death of my husband Connie. You tell the story of loss beautifully. Poetry got me through my pain and it brought me peace to remember him in such a way. I wasn't asking for pity either, and sometimes the past creeps in and I write another sad one. We had 55 years together and I still hate my empty bed. Those last three quatrains retell my experience as well. Great stuff here. xxx Nancy

I thought of you, Nancy, while posting this and wondered if you would relate to how Phil (my neighbor) felt after losing his spouse. Thank you for your feedback. It is so good that you turned to poetry, as I can see that as a comfort to you and a tribute to Jim.
Thank you, too, for that shiny gold six-star review.
    Lots of hugs,

Good job, Connie, on your poignant poem. You told the story well. I like the rhyme & there is good flow. I could 'see' this as I was reading your well-chosen words. Thanks for sharing. Jan

This is a lovely poem, Connie. I know what the gentleman is going through since my own (ex) husband who lived with me passed in January. We do run the gamut of emotions. You have described it well. Marilyn

How sad it must be to suddenly be alone in your old age after having your spouse with you for so long. Worse yet, it happens to HALF of all couples, since one of them must die first. Good job on the poem, though it's not something I want to think about. :)

Thank you, Phyllis, for your review. I debated posting this as it is somewhat sad. I wrote it for my neighbor but not sure I'm going to give it to him. I promised him a poem, but I think he is looking for a poem about his wife, which I will work on. She was a sweet lady.
    Thanks again.
