Haha I can think of nothing worse! We live 17 km out of town and they STILL manage to find us! My husband gets impatient and tells them to be on their way but I usually take the little scripture brochure they leave. They don't ask for a donation but they are full of free scripture haha...I usually have some washing to do or I'm going out if you know what I mean.

I mean you don't find me at someones door giving them my agnostic opinion, hoping that I'll sway them to join me...I think people in general deserve that respect. Each to their own but I prefer not to be preached to on my own door step. If I wanted to know about the bible I'd be at church right?!

I like your sense of humour as you handle a delicate subject with a smart dose of reality. I'm afraid it's what's needed. And anyway what's wrong with a free sermon. Surely the man upstairs isn't going to be too happy that people are expected to pay for the word of the Lord.

Oh I forgot...church is big business these days, why look at Hill Song for goodness sake! LOL

Well done Craig. Excellent rhymes with "gifture" and "scripture"...you would certainly have been scraping the barrel for a rhyme with todays word LOL

Cheers P

Thanks for the great review, P. I remember seeing something on Hill Song a while back - the people who run it aren't exactly hard up - and yeah, that's something of an understatement. Most grateful :) Craig

    You got that right...
AND they have young friends in high places that are a good drawcard although they deny it.

Hi Craig. I did figure this one out that it was related to gift giving. And it is. I get a brownie button AND a gold star for that. Lol. I guess every school did something like that. I really do prefer giving to receiving. Thank you for sharing

Good use of "gifture" when we want "gift" but as two syllables! Fine limerick but wonder if you could reduce the second short line by one syllable? I always thought the two short syllables had to be the same number.
Are you talking about people who try to convert you by coming door to door? I just give back verses and typically sharing the doctrine of the Trinity, the divinity of Christ who made it unnecessary to do good works to earn His grace etc and they leave.

    Hi Helen,

Thanks for bringing that forward. To be honest, I don't even remember when I wrote that late last night, if I had a limerick in mind or not; although it certainly (apart from the discrepancy you noted) follows the form. It reads ok in my head, but I will look at if I can even up the number of syllables. As for JWs or Mormons at the door - I usually find saying something like, "Oh, I was just about to sacrifice a goat in the basement - just a sec, I need to tie him up" works. They're never there by the time I come back :)

    Cheers, Craig

Lol! That's a good one. Beware if they ask if they can help with the sacrifice.

Excellent limerick, Craig. It's quite amusing when one would rather have or should I say needs a bit of cash rather than a verse.

perfect metre and rhyme and yes I've heard of this word before, I think. lol.

Excellente

Hi Craig,

I enjoyed this limerick :) It has the right feel to the meter when read out loud. My dogs loved it when I read it out loud to them. They opened their eyes to politely listen and then continued with their snooze when I was done. We don't like it when folks ask for money either. Some homeless people here in Calgary walk alongside the vehicles stopped for red lights holding their hat out for money. We have moments when we'll give them something and moments when we don't. We like to help, but not for their alcohol and drug usage. We prefer to give to the Salvation Army at Christmas time. We have seen them in action providing food for rescue workers and caring for those in need.

Good subject today that got me yacking.

Joy xx

I'm glad your pooches enjoyed this little poem, Joy. Mine slept through me writing it. We've got that holding out hat problem licked here in the town near where I live - no traffic lights lol

I hope they don't turn nasty if you don't give them money - that really irks me. Cheers, Craig

Pontificating at the Wrong Door...
(hahahaha)
I'd rather you hear what I say,
or kneel down with me and we'll pray.
(My money's for gambling, and drinking and such;
for ignoring the poor; for my date - double-dutch.)
Please, listen, and put nines away...

What can I say, Craig? I live in a crime-infested city anymore... (Yikes!) *grin*

What a fun word. Fine limerick and inventive rhyming. Good presentation too. I like the slant rhyme choices and how they all sounds read aloud. Good bouncy beat. No nits. Bravo.

Warmly, rd

Thanks again for a great review, RD - although I'm scratching my head at which one is the slant rhyme lol

    Most grateful :) Craig

reply by rama devi on 12-Jun-2018
Verse, purse and worse have the same sounds but the vowels are not the same, so they are slant rhyme (assonant and rhyming auditorily but not visually)
reply by the author on 12-Jun-2018
Ohhhh, I always thought slant rhyme meant "near" - as in not quite the same sound. Thanks for setting me straight there, RD. Never too old to learn :)
reply by rama devi on 12-Jun-2018
It also means that...near rhyme. If the consonants are different but the vowels are the same, it can also be a slant rhyme!

Pure rhyme will have the endings fully the same.

Another word for slant rhyme is proximal rhyme.

I'm not totally sure why this piece has a mature content warning on it because I didn't see anything worthy of the disclaimer, other then that I thought it was quite humorous and enjoyable

I don't see a mature warning content, and certainly didn't intend there to be one. Thanks for the kind comments :) Craig

Hi, Craig,

But...don't you know that many Christians believe the very best thing and the most precious thing they can give you is a Bible verse.

You know, that whole thing about 'not casting your pearls to swine,' will usually keep them from sharing a Bible verse with someone who doesn't want to hear the wonderful wisdom. Unless they judge you too far gone...

(I'm probably going to be struck down dead now...)

This limerick, Inappropriate Gifting, uses the featured word in a good way and takes a humorous stance against the money aspect of organized religion. Nice job.
