Great work on this piece, following the requirement of the prompt to a tea (or is it tee?). Anyway, great description, soo much so that the reader felt like they were there along side you.

This is a lovely entry for the Sense of Place Short Story Contest. Your descriptive narrative had me right there with you in this beautiful place.
I liked that you still refer to it as "Decoration Day". The honor you give to your long since passed on relatives is a lovely tradition; to picnic there where they have been laid to rest.
I thank you for the pronunciation key at the end as I was not familiar with these locations.
Good luck in the competition with this story!

Well, this post makes me want to go camping! Lovely descriptions here. I've never been to Arkansas yet. Maybe someday. And I hope you get to go fishing soon! Go away, WINTER! :) Nice work.

You bring the reader with you nicely on this trip to a place of your ancestors.
" My spot is at the foot of an old hickory with exposed roots. I have packed the dirt down over the years and it fits me perfectly. It's my familiar summer hideaway. "
This one sentence sums up for me all the years that were spent alone in nature Really nice sense of place. Good luck.

I like this well written and descriptive little story. It also is very informative giving the reader some education about these areas that may not have been known. Thanks for sharing it. Well done.

The feeling of the 1920s permeate the area as proclaimed by the scattered country cemeteries where the graves are old and no one has recently been buried - this didn't really give me a direct correlation to the twenties just because there were untended/abandoned graves. I'm not sure that's an automatic connection.
That aside, you did a great job of creating a true sense of place and occasion with this piece. Nice descriptions and warm tone.
best of luck to you.

Thank you. I noticed it too after I had posted it. It felt off. I was trying to convey that these graves were from the 1920s. I appreciate your comment. I?ll give it some thought and see how I can improve it.

I can feel and see the mist rising from the mountain stream and see the graves all dressed in decorations from the decedents. I loved your story and it certainly should win.

I wish I could go with you. You describe an excellent place. A place of fond memories and family ties that keep bringing you back. I have a place like that of my own.

The first book will be out sometimes in 18. There is talk about possible movie. I wish to bring readers to know our dark side and the light side. We're just folks who love our state and know how to lick our wounds.
