Since it is linguistic you might have added a brief aside to Wallace Steven's famous poem, " The Emperor of Ice Cream" perhaps something subversive about it these days?

An interesting poem indeed. I think mine was less inscrutable ;-)

I had heard the origin of the ice cream cone happened at that World's Fair by rolling pastry, but I didn't know it was Persian.

It's great whether frozen or drippy.

Great line! I have no cones, but I do have chocolate ice cream in the freezer... sure would be good about now. Thanks for the idea. :)

And thus began long shared cultural links as well as rivalry between Syria and Iraq. I've always been suspicious of those world fairs. Nothing good comes from those things when people share ideas and possibly ice cream held in wafer cones. ;-)

There's more layers to this Limerick than meet the eye.

Excellent, Craig. What happened to lame? Looking forward to it was the only thing keeping me going.

Gloria

I've always been suspicious how a single country can claim to have a "world fair", or a "world series" for that matter. I don't remember seeing my invitation! World Cup soccer and World Cup rugby, on the other hand, are exactly what they claim to be.

I'm glad to know that my genius ode to ice cream has brought meaning to your otherwise empty existence, Gloria ;-)

Thanks so much for the delightful review.

Oh WOW - what a great story in your notes - I couldn't have guessed from the poem, of course, without running for my dictionary (or Google -lol) because "zalabiya" is new to me, but YUM. I can smell those warm wafers, taste that sweet ice cream!

You're so lucky it's breakfast time for me, or you'd be in big trouble! Ice cream and waffles for brekkie - yep, works for me! Thanks again :)

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

An excellent work that reminisces the crunchy milky interplay of Zalabiya and ice cream in the mouth of those who cherish it.

The work highlights the pliant nature of the medley and the degree of enjoyment it imparts.

The work earns it's texture through the use of rhymes and onomatopoeia.

Excellent work! Keep the flag flying!

I enjoyed your author notes of how ice cream cones were invented :) You didn't offend me at all. Mr. Whippy must be whipped cream? Now you have me craving an ice cream cone lol! A great word for today.

Joy xx

Mr Whippy is a global ice cream company that sells mostly from mobile vans - since the early 1960s. In the US, he's called Mister Whippy, for some reason. I guess he hasn't made it to Canada - perhaps there's some strongly established rival there?
    Thanks, Joy :)

I suppose Mr. Whippy is a double entendre? can't imagine why, otherwise, you thought this could offend. It's light and humorous. Well rhymed. Good flow. Just one suggestion (optional):

It's great whether frozen or drippy.
It's great, whether frozen or drippy.

I prefer un-drippy ice cream, personally. :)

    Hi RD,
Thanks for the fun review, and the suggestion. No double entendre intended. Sometimes it can seem difficult to write something without at least one person feeling they've been personally offended. I was just wondering if a poem about ice cream could manage that...
    Cheers,

Ah, I see. Well, it's a charming ICE-CREAMY kind of poem. I'd be surprised if anyone finds it offensive.

This is a Limerick! I loved it! But that Persian dessert sounds calorie loaded, so I think I'll stick withe the Mr Whippy! A happy uplifting Limerick that brought a smile today, loved it! Love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly. That's the great thing about delicious desserts - the more of them you have, the more there is of you to enjoy them ;-) Much appreciated, glad to have made you smile. Craig

Hi, Craig;
I enjoyed the poem, but I loved the little story about how the ice cream cone was born. I think I'm learning a great deal from your book - you are doing a wonderful job of using the words to their best light,

~patty~
just for the record - I'm not offended

Congrats for taking on this challenge.
You have written a poem which captures the essence of ice cream but chosen the topic as the word zalabiya (wafer).
I enjoyed the poem anyway as you do explain the word and origins in the author notes.
:-) Shirley

Hi, Shirley. Yes, it has been my intention from the beginning to incorporate the "word of the day" into a poem, but not necessarily having to be the only, or even the major, theme... although it often works out that way. Many thanks for the kind review - Craig
