"Robert always wanted to be a lawyer", is short, succinct and very much to the point. This talented poet's work is extremely well-written and thought provoking. Choice concerning an occupation, is so very important. I look forward to reading your next post.

His heart not being in it is the same as most people in this world who never really work at what they like and always dream of what they could have done but couldn't. I like the poem and this is a good entry. I did not find any errors.

In my opinion, a sad commentary about the power parents wield over their children, too often either influencing or directing their futures. This poem describes this in succinct and plaintive detail. And, in regards to the picture, it says more than a thousand words - there is an emptiness in his eyes...

well written, robina. it is a shame when potential goes wasted and dreams are dashed for no good reason. I imagine your father found joy wherever he could......meeshu

A very sad, reflective poem... but demonstrating and revealing a very good point: we only have one life to live, and how much more rewarding life can be if we follow our heart and follow our dreams... I know that I wanted to be a writer, but my parents "poo-pooed" the idea, and thus, I didn't even try... which saddens me... but I am retired now, and writing to my hearts content... so it has worked out pretty well for me... one of the lucky ones... it sadly shows the abuse your husband had to endure throughout his childhood -- one of the worst abuses, "killing our dreams..." and making us feel 'less than.' Thanks for sharing this meaningful tribute to your husband...

Hi there;

I often think our parents are cruel in their intent on us living their dream. It seems as though Robert was forced to be an accountant, which is still a good living, but it is much different from the law.

I have both an accounting degree and a law degree, and it seemed like I had to use a completely different skill set for each one.

Good luck in the contest,

~patty~

Very well done indeed. It was a great picture of a man who would have been a great lawyer. It was with a touch of sadness that I read this because I can remember a time when dreams were just dreams, I had a parent that controlled the reigns of my life. It was a shame that he didn't get to become what he really wanted. It instilled several emotions-anger, doubt, fear, regret to name a few. Thank you so much for sharing.

This is an interesting piece about your husband and a great photograph of him. One can but wonder why a parent or anyone beats up a child but regardless he loved you and probably loved his job in a way as well. You seemed to be his happy, how wonderful is that - Dinah

This speaks though Robert ever wanted to be a lawyer but he could not and became a good accountant, no one knows why, better God knows; well said, well done. Keep Writing -- DR ALCREATOR

Robina you know lufe sometimes is not worth living if its not being fulfilled. Sorry for your loss though. And the abuse he endured. Many people go through life miserable because they have not reached their fulfilment. But in heaven Im told and I believe that there is joy unspeakable there. Thanks for sharing
