I feel this way when I hike in Austin. You did an amazing job at capturing it. I loved the way that you phrased it- I zone in. There is too much to life to zone out. We must zone in to the world.

Yes, abigailunderhill, we must zone in. Given that I last went to a drive-in nearly fifty years ago, I am amazed that I zoned in on the things that stayed in my memory. Thank you for your generous, six star review.

This is an awesome free verse, Andre. Yes, the sounds of nature is much more exhilarating, I agree, I hate headphones and seeing people with them, especially in nature. Great job! ~Kerry

Sis Cat,
This is wonderful. I so often tune out, because that is easy nowadays. When I was young, I tuned in. I would so love that again. I found no fault with the work and I would recommend it. Theresa.

Yes, Theresa, by tuning in instead of out, I had composed the first line of this poem by the time I descended the mountain. I could not have written this if I wore my headphones up the mountain. If I can write this poem by paying attention, what more could I write if I make this a regular practice? Thank you for your generous, six star review. I appreciate it.

A lovely poem so simply stated, yet expressed with such great images and lessons that we need to learn. Yes, if we just listen, look, smell and touch our environment we might be more connected to the universe and to others. Your poem reminded me of walking meditation. Well done on writing this. Susan

Yes, Susan, I find walking to be a form of meditation. Each step is a prayer. Thank you for your well-phrased review.

I enjoyed your free verse poem and the message it conveyed. You hit upon a serious problem in today's world - the inability to remove the headphones and just listen to the world around us. There is music in nature and in the simplest of mankind's activities. Well done

Yes, fayesh, the music of nature is simple or complex, but we often block it out with our headphones. I am reminded of my commute to work. Sometimes, the traffic is so backed up that I sit in my car on a bridge over a creek. It is precisely at that one or two minutes before the light changes that I turn off audiobooks or music, roll down my windows and listen to the sound of the creek at dawn. It is so beautiful. We honor the universe when we pay attention to nature. Thank you for your review.

I love this poem! It feels like I am there, on the path with you. It flows very nicely. You are helping to make me a fan of free verse. :) I thought I didn't get it, but I do - if it is written like this. Thank you. All the best - Cheryl

Oh, thank you, Cheryl, for your review of my free verse. I seldom write it and had been struggling with a free verse poem about pumas when I took a walk up a mountain and put my phone away. By the time I descended I heard the first lines of this poem which I wrote in half a day which I could not accomplish in a month with the puma poem. Thank you for your review.

I just posted my first free verse poem here! I thought it had to be hard to read and confusing, and I didn't care for the form. Your example helped me. Thank you! Happy Holidays and best wishes for a great 2018 - Cheryl

I enjoyed your description of being in the moment and especially liked the image of merging "into the sky". Here's to dispensing with the headsets more. Cheers- Joan

Yes, Joan, by dispensing with the headsets on this walk, I "heard" the opening lines of this poem. Thank you for your review.

This is a deceptively visceral poem. While ostensibly dealing
with the physical sensation of listening/hearing it
actually engages our recognition of being disconnected with
the breadth of wonder we are often missing out on...particularly
as it relates to nature and it's ability to focus us.

I suspect many a joggerr who reads this will find themselves
remembering bits and pieces of this the next time they are out
for a run.

Nicely done :-)

Yes, Leineco, one of the things that impressed me about this poem and this walking experience is that by focusing on nature, the line came to me "Instead of zoning out, I zone in." After my walk, I almost wrote this line on a piece of paper and left it at the trail head, but decided to bring it home where I finished this poem in hours. I would not have written this poem if I wore headphones up and down that mountain. Thank you for your review.

This is a beautifully written free verse that indicates a love for nature -- its tranquility, beauty and music.

Like you, I appreciate being with one with nature, without listening to music or sounds from a device.

The imagery and personification are just stunning.

Thank you for taking the reader on that walk with you. I zoned in as I read your well written poem.
